Things are starting to snowball, all the fabrication is being completed (only a couple of small bits once motor is in) Engine bay is prepped and ready to go, removable rad support all riv nutted into place, holes for cables and hoses drilled, all brake lines shaped and bent ready to go. Just needs a final sand and will be time to put some paint down. Have also purchased some other parts I have been chasing for the last 12 months am pretty stoked to get my hands on. Will add to the style of the wheels, next update should be a big one.

Knocking you probably wont be able to tell , pinking you can hear which is when your car is running hot. 3rd and 4th around 3-4.5k RPM is where knock happens on these engines. The amount of load is actually pretty high because of double vanos lower torque zones. Running some proper data logging (none of this OBDII crap) would reveal whats going on. The ones to look at is the IAT and coolant temps. You may/probably have a defective thermo stat or clutch fan thats now pants. I would start with the cooling system first and go from there. Happy to log your car if you need to with my software which is the only one in the world doing both native telemetry and the knock control system. BMW software doesn't even poll the ECU for knock values. I think it was put into it for motorsport and factory purposes.

Hello, everyone! When I came from Germany last year, I bought an E39 540i straight away. I was lucky to find a New Zealand new one with low mileage and previously driven by an elderly woman. I love my bimmer and don't regret the buy. In my opinion, a lot of these ‘modern classic' cars come for a very fair price here in New Zealand. Even, if I needed to address a couple of issues, such as valve covers, brakes and many smaller items. I believe this is a great forum, and I'm looking forward to swapping ideas with you.

Up for auction - tomorrow morning, 1st September, is a 1995 Alpina B12 5.7 with manual gearbox, one of only 25 manuals ever built. The spiel: " Extremely Rare one of 25 manual 5.7 Litre Alpina B12 5.7. 1995 reg with just 48k kms. 57 made in total ,32 shifttronic autos and 25 manualsThe B12 5.7 Coupe enhanced the 380PS (375hp) 5.6-liter V12 850CSi with a slightly larger displacement 5.7-liter V12 featuring a number of upgrades such as the reprogrammed ECUs and modified intakes to develop 416PS (410hp) and 570Nm for a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 300km/h (186mph). Not to be confused with the earlier B12 which was based on the 850 ci auto. this B12 5.7 was based on the 5.6 liter 850 CSi which is already a rare car as it is so finding an Alpina is even harder so expect this to reach a hefty price at auction on Thurday Morning the 1st of September." I'd buy it, but it's left hand drive.

The range on water is 78-121c which = dead center. So the gauge is a bit useless. Your ECU monitors inlet and outlet temps ... if theyre wildy out then there is an issue with your thermostat. You really want your inlet temp to be low as that is what the engine is using for the 'engine temp' scale and ignition retard

Yes thats correct according to my reading and chats with cert guys. If it's on the plate it has to be on the car. Even if you remove the part and go back to the factory option the car is uncerted, meaning no WOF, meaning no insurance. If you want to change any thing that is listed on the plate it need a to be rechecked and a new plate issued.

OK, not a Touring, but given BMW didn't make any Utes (pickups, backies - whatever) this is probably the best place for this. A tired E39 M5 finds a new lease of life.

That's mine. It was Tom's (M3_Power) from brand new. Those are the stock 18's. I have two sets of the stock 18's so I can run a square setup to fill out the front guards a little better, and have a full set of the 19's plus a set of the rears (thanks Brent), so I can run those square if I want too.

In the disassembly of MDS50 and MSS54/52 ECU code. The MSS50/52/54 ECUs all have a very advanced knock control system. It has a per cylinder hi and low flag system which allows the ECU to determine the onset of knock and prepare for it. The other variables in the ignition retard equation are IAT and Coolant temps. There is quite a bit of logic that goes into it which I'm not going to stick on a public forum but it is the reason a lot of you will see wild differences in power. The S5X engines run quite high compression ratios for a road engine on pump gas and with that comes a close to the edge ignition control system. Here is some dyno software I developed for it ... top right is the knock control system read out.

madness. loving it. might get one in about 13 years when depreciation makes it "affordable".
