  1. This is Glenn's reply."Yes... it won't start What have you checked ?, have you any mechanical ability and access to tools & test equipment ???" The first line is simply his idea of a funny opening, just his sense of humour. The second line is trying to ascertain and eliminate what's already been checked, and finding out what the guy can check himself. I don't see anything in this myself, but guess it could be taken the wrong way, but again, it comes down to reading what you want to into something.
  2. Good try Mark, but it is a losing battle. IMHO the biggest problem is that they see what's on the screen, but don't really understand what's been written, or spend some time looking up what some of the words actually mean. As I said in my previous post, think about what you've written before you hit the "Add Reply" button.
  3. If you guys actually read what you wrote before you posted it, and worked out whether it made sense or not, or if it was just a reaction to another post, then this site would be a lot better off, if this offends you, then you're who I'm getting at. You should be trying to help, and not just posting smart comments trying to wind other people up. Some don't have thick skin like me, and you've got rid of some of the best already, soon there won't be any around who can actually help when you need it. Think about it.
  4. I've stayed away from the type of threads some of you are complaining about, but I think it's obvious why you get yourselves into the type of thread flaming you do. You wonder why you get picked on, and then say the type of thing you just have in this thread. What I'm getting sick of is the type of smart arsed comments which have just been posted. If you really want to learn, and have something to offer then grow up and get on with it. This is a BMW forum, not somewhere for some of you to try to be bigger than you are. My 2c.

AFAIK and if I remember right, 650 lb on an inboard spring like that isn't that much? I would have expected a much higher rated spring if you really wanted it stiff?
  6. Don't listen to Mitch, there are some out there, just be patient
  7. Fuel or spark, haven't knocked the coil lead or something silly like that? Take the fuel line off where it connects under the intake manifold and shove it in an empty coke bottle, then turn the key and see if it's pumping gas? If not it'll probably be relay or pump, relays are a common fault on these. Check spark by taking a lead off one of the plugs and putting a spare plug in it, then hold it against the rocker cover with a screwdriver or something with a rubber handle and get someone to turn it over again, look for a nice strong spark.
  8. Under $400, no GST or Tax, over $400 you are liable for it, but don't always get charged. I've bought in bits up to $1500 worth and got them in free, it's the luck of the draw. I always try to get goods sent USPS if from the States, seem to be cheapest by a long way, and I've had no problems with them. Up to 10kg is around $30 us, but I've been charged as much as $80 US for the same size package, get shipping quote first, it can make a difference as to who you buy from. Go for it, it is generally cheaper, and fairly safe now.
  9. Any hardware store and use Fuelite, works wonders.
  10. Sounds to me like fuel issue, maybe relay or pump. Shouldn't be too hard to diagnose with the car in front of you tho, get a garage to have a look.
  11. OK Ashkan, does it have 4 or 6 bolts on the side cover plates where the half shafts come out, 4 makes it small case, 6 id med case. Then mark the drive shaft and output shafts and count the turns to get the ratio. One turn on the half shaft should be between 3 and 4.5 turns of the drive shaft.
  12. Thanks Cam, I have none of the marks in the ring groove, and am in the process of cleaning and reassembling at the moment. Am able to reuse everything at this stage thankfully.
  13. Just had a thought, so don't laugh. Is it likely that the volume of oil in the cylinder was protecting the top surfaces and the only place the detonation could arc was on that skirt surface, does that make sense? The detonation was caused by the high compression due to all the oil in the chambers by the way.
  14. Nothing to do with running it in Andy, solely due to the sweeper at Hampton, I believe somewhere around 15 cars have done their motors on that corner so far.
  15. Guess I should elaborate a bit. Put the new motor in last weekend and took it to the dyno on Wednesday. Had a full remap and didn't miss a beat, so went down to Hampton Downs early Friday morn for some fun. First lap just after the biigggg sweeper it started blowing huge clouds of oil smoke out the exhaust, so by the time I notced it, the engine had started missing and farting and I pulled over and got towed back to the pits. Didn't even complete the first lap. Got home and took it apart yesterday and found cup fulls of oil all thru the breathers and intake manifold, the E28 has small return holes in the head, and the centrifugal forces kept the oil in the head up against the breather outlet. When I started using the throttle in the sweeper it caused maximum vacuum and sucked all the oil thru the intake. Lesson is, if you have a race engine with the same configuration, use a catch tank from the top breather and send the oil back to the sump via the dipstick hole, and block the breather hole in the intake side. But why is the detonation on the side of the piston?
  16. Seems to be the general consensus, but why none on the crown or plugs, they're the normal place?
  17. What's caused the pitting on the side of this piston. All 6 pistons have the same markings just on the top section between the crown and the first compression ring, no pitting on the crown of the piston, or the head chambers. Also no markings on the spark plugs or the head gasket, and the compression rings are bound in the groove by small shards of aluminium, therefore I had no compression and no engine running. Caused me to change my engine on Friday afternoon for an early Saturday start at the track, turned the key and had it running again with the old engine around midnight.
  18. Whats on the tag on the back plate under one of the bolts?
  19. Wheel arch is higher but inner guard is the same.
  20. Ouch, I'm in the wrong game.
  21. Can do in 2 hrs Ray if all goes to plan, water pump can be a pain, then it takes a bit longer. Have done cam belt in an hr. If you allow 3 to 4 hrs you'd be well covered.
  22. Facelift plastic bumpers, prefacelift, chrome bumpers.
