I'm not 100% on those figures above but the 318 seems to have more power per weight unit, I remember the 318 and 320 having similiar performance figures but the 320s torque is probably its saving grace in keeping it that bit quicker than the 318. The M20 sounds so much better than the l4 M40 also.

IMO, one will have a higher chance of survival in a late model Japanese car as opposed to an old escort- it obvious. Technology has not gone backwards yet. I think driving faster rather than slower (not over the limit mind) is a lot safer as I am more alert and stimulated when I am actively involved in the driving. If people are naturally crap, uncoordinated drivers, make them sit a test, if they fail- no liscence. It will put more people in public transport and lower fatalities and crash rates.
