Not saying the PCV system has failed, but more has not done it's job which is to separate the oil from blow-by gasses in the crankcase going in to the intake manifold. I think too much oil in the crankcase has been sucked in to the inlet manifold and made it's way to the inlet valves to be burned off.
-
Could just be some residual oil somewhere where it shouldn't be, and should burn off in time. With the crankcase being overfilled I'm thinking the excessive oil volume has overwhelmed the separators so you have a nice oily intake manifold.

Have you still got my old ones? :-)

The rain sensor might just need re - initialisation. I have inpa if you need help with setting it up

Had a slight leak from where some clamping bushes join the exhaust sections together, but that has since been fixed with new clamps. I'll smoke test the exhaust while I smoke test the crank case and the inlet side of the engine. pretty sure it's tight though.

You'd want to remove the gas cap in that case.

I have that same kit - got in 94' also. Built it up about 3 years ago..... still took me 11 hours to complete it after 17 years.

Facelift models tend to fetch more.

You can on the odd occasion. Not pleasant. That's what i was thinking, remove some of the outer skin, but the 2 exhaust shops I tried were not keen...

You'd think so but the ones used in the M5 are pretty resilient.

So I had recently removed the cats from my M5, and replaced with mandrel bent pipes. This was all good and well, but am now having a bit of remorse since my car is an early M5 and uses about 1litre of oil every 1500 - 2000kms. With having no cats in place, it's a bit smelly and not pleasant on longer journeys. I still have the original cats, but the ends which face the engine are double-walled. This looks like it may pose a problem with re-welding. Can anyone recommend a specialist or a technique that could be used to get these back in? Side of cat facing engine : Side of cat facing rear of car :

Good to know. Cheers!

It's on the low priority list for now. But since the unit was used on a few different bmw platforms it means they're in ample supply if you look all over the globe. The Dynavin is appealing, and would modernise the car. But this M5 has a surprise lurking in the rear seat - a second MID unit.

I'll need the video module and mk4 nav unit as well. The 16:9 units are getting long in the tooth so the lcd screens will need replacing soon - have researched the procedure for that and it's no fun.

Send me a pm.

Well the copper who got me for speeding that same day didn't say anything... Still I need the LCM4 module to be able to turn off the annoying flickering it does for the number plate LED's and the front Halo's. I might retain the incandescent bulbs for the interior with the exception of the puddle lights - They have improved the lighting significantly. If I can get a brighter LED for the ceiling boot I'll probably stick with LED's in there too.
-
Maintenance order placed for a few things under the bonnet. In the mean time, swapped out the incandescent interior and boot bulbs for some led's. Perhaps LED blue/white colour is not the best against a caramel coloured interior? I will also be replacing the boot ceiling light with a brighter item. Pics came out a bit shyte....

I can't find any documentation that suggests the m5 monocoque is more rigid then any other e39 sedan. So long as all running gear, trims and other gadgets have been transferred over this is technically a hand built e39 m5.

Still pretty good buying at that price imo. Good second hand upper oil pan's (The one I presume that is cracked, as the lower oil pan is not overly expensive) do come up on ebay.co.uk for a decent price.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-788767075.htm Very good price - Looks to have been re-shelled though which shouldn't really matter, just won't have the 'WBS,,,' chassis number making it a true M car.

Only one way to ensure that lsd you bought is working properly :-)
