Yup, I was pretty much describing it from what you saw when you checked the level. Might have to bring it around to yours to get the oil changed. Does the filter have to be replaced at the same time? On another note: there seems to be a small coolant leak again - not sure what since the thermostat was replaced and does not seem to be leaking out of the sensor like the last one. So might have to bring it to you for that too . Can definitely see some small particle spray (likely from coolant falling on the belt(s) ).

Think the trans oil on my e39 530i is getting pretty old; no idea whether it's been changed before. How often are these supposed to be changed? (along with the filter) I think the oil has turned black/dirty. Also, will I notice much difference after putting new oil in?

Lovely car. Don't sell ! @Jooles: Take me for a ride in the 850i too . Only ever been in a 840

All goods!

I'm pretty keen, but no idea how to check whether I have the flat pins? For my 2001 530i ms, 6 cd changer in the back and 16:9 nav screen not sure if that makes a diff.

Watcha getting next Jordy?

Oo, where abouts do you get the parts from? I'm just here to see the missus' family (she's Estonian). Driving a Chevy captiva around; moderately torquey. xD

I'm currently in Estonia, and spotted a nice maroon'ish colored e39 m5 here on the island of Hiiumaa today as I was driving by. Was in a rush so didn't get a chance to take a snap!

I drive around there regularly, was probably coming from (or going to) chancery. Should have jumped in front of the car and said hi!

Nice buy! Love the e39s, and the 530i's are great cars - definitely enjoy driving it. Should be possible to do the valve cover gaskets in 1-2 hours (based on what ppl tell me). I had ones on my 530i replaced about a month ago.. the gaskets had turned solid, and oil was dripping down onto the exhaust and stinking! All good now Got brand new plugs in at around the same time. Take some more pics

Only additional devices (on top of stock ones) is the after market amp and sub woofers in the trunk. Those are obv not going to be running, but no idea if they draw power when car is off, hope not... The battery is located in the trunk right? Have not disconnected batteries on the e39 before.

Hey, I'll be overseas for 3 weeks. Is it recommended to disconnect the battery during this period (on my e39 530i)? Since it won't be started or anything during this period.

I had to get a trans rebuilt 2 years ago via BM Workshop for my other e39 which set me back about $5.5k. They sent it to a trans shop but not sure which one - could ask them, but yeah it's still a steep price - there are quite possibly cheaper ones around.

Is there a reason you'd go for an m52 over m54?

Had some resonators installed at the center (replacing the straight pipes) this morning to get rid of the cabin droning. Sounds very pleasant inside the car now, and the outside still sounds good - though slightly quieter, but a fair bit deeper. Liking it so far!
-
Take it in for a look / scan.

Yep. Luckily Ray had a second hand one to sell, so did the install over at his workshop.

Got the new rocker cover gasket, thermostat and one of the power steering hoses installed by Glenn today (Botany Motorworx). No more of those leaks now . Will need to do transmission service soon - apparently the oil is quite dirty.

Haven't updated this in a while. Car is currently at ~112000km. Just got in a few parts: - 6 new spark plugs - new thermostat - to replace my current one, which has been very slowly leaking coolant through the sensor area - new rocker cover gasket - to fix oil leak that's been there forever Installed the plugs last night. Could be placebo but driving feels a bit smoother - torque/power feels more consistent. Have also recently changed the front right tie rod for WOF (the plastic boot was not tied down properly, so water got in and rusted the rack end, causing play in the wheel). Going to get the thermostat and gasket in next week somewhere. Too busy to be without a car even for a day atm though, so will see if timing suits. Next on the list: - Re-spray rear bumper. Ever since someone did hit n run at the car park, haven't had the chance to fix the scratches left behind. Will do this very soon. - Have talked to Jason at Woolf mufflers about putting a mid resonator in my exhaust system to reduce the droning inside the car but produce a deeper note outside, something I would not mind at all. - Vanos seals (Ray does these right?) - minor oil leak coming from the Vanos area - Transmission service - replace filter and gasket (and oil?) - Fix some creaking sound that sometimes appears when adjusting steering wheel height up and down. Online forums point to a specific nut under/behind the steering wheel that causes this. Looks like a simple fix. - Audio upgrade - Considering upgrading the front speakers. Some stuff to do .
