Save yourself hte hassle and take it to someone who knows BMW's, if your in Auckland - see Glenn from Botany motorworkz. It is hard to get an accurate picture of what needs to be done without actually seeing the car. Your starting issues are possibly a worn distributor cap, or maybe an ignition problem, it could be one of a number of things. Your best bet is to spend an extra few dollars and get a mechanic who knows these engines to have a look over it, he will be able to get to the route of the problem faster and probably with less trial and error. You can buggerize around buying new batteries, dizzy cap's etc etc. but at the end of the day, if you dont know what your looking at your probably best to leave it to the pro's to do it. You might end up replacing something that is perfectly good and doesnt fix the issue. You can save yourself a few bob by changing your own air-filter which is just unclipping a bunch of clips and removing and replacing the old air filter, if you have done it before, change the oil and filter - not a biggy but if you mess it up you can be hit hard in the pocket.

dry paint. really you think you can extract some of the weight from it?

I think I weighed mine a while back, I think if my memory serves me right 9.8kg. The paint showed up on the underside a little too well, can take a few pics later when it drys. Camera phone isnt that flash but pics seem okay.

Hey Graham, not sure if it helps but I've got one out of the car, tis a different design to that one above. Unsure whether it is genuine bmw but the parts that mount to the car and hte guard are tubular with a bracket plate on the end and there is a circular hole for reaching the sump plug. Give me a yell if you want pics and I'll grab some. Could spray some paint over the rust for your pic purpose. Andy.

lots of the panel differences - would cost $20,000 just to get the panels there and fitted, not to mention the paint job. Go with a Mtech 1 kit + M3 engine conversion.

Not that I have a clue what I'm on about when it comes to electrical systems but .... could it be a conflict between the 528 chip on the front of the instrument cluster and the new 735i engine management system. We swapped a few 320i clusters aroudn a few weeks back to see if we could fix a faulty cluster and sure enough, facelift did not like pre-facelift (varying ECU's).
