  4. Dam those tires look HOT I knew they would As Riley mentioned earlier I was checking out some Hankook Z211 Semi slicks suitable for Wet/Dry and Road use ( dot legal ) With a mates rates price they are around $180 each per tire fitted and balacned. I hear the hard compound is good for 30,000 kms and according to the owner of the tire shop a lot of guys are using these on road cars also.

Hi Dave, A known Local gearbox builder/engineer did the welding reinforcement on Riley sub frame, so I'm sure something could be sorted out. Usual deal of time/money and not being able to use the car eh?

    BMW LSD

Yo Riley You should investigate to see if you can swap over the crown wheel and pinion from a regular NON LSD diff that would means heaps of ratio options and a brilliant chance to fit more clutch packs for higher lockup Seems like a better way to do it than fitting a large case diff I don't see how BMW would make the med case diff totally different in design just because it was an LSD, only the center should be different.
  8. I remember My Dads 2002 from when i was 5 years old ( Im only 19 ) it was indeed Inka orange and it was great. It even towed the jet boat from Christchurch to Lake Ohau when i was 2 That is my favorite pre 90's BMW. Sure there are others that are fast ,good looking but the 2002 has character and heaps of it.
  9. Which valve springs are you going to run, and where are they from? and since you have recently built a "series" motor did you notice if the 731 head's valve springs are the same as a 325 in overall dimensions?. Good luck with both engine builds.

    Exhaust

I can see in the picture it is 304 Stainless, which is where most of the cost is going being that its stainless steel. You could go for a Normal Steel twin in out muffler for about $200. On my car i had single 2.25" pipe and single 2.25" muffler done for $180. the pipe replaced 3/4 of the factory setup and had a collector installed. Sounds like OEM, goes like OEM and it saved me about $200
  11. hey guys I would just like to say what an absolute champion Ray at Hell BM is. Once again he has found the desirable and hard to get parts that i need for my car. This is the 3rd time i have had Important Suspension and steering parts sent to Chch from Ray in Auckland and it is very worthwhile for all the shipping hassle to know that when the parts arrive they are in good working order and exactly as described. Good Job ray, can't wait for the next round of parts. He even gave me a nice discount For being Bimmersport If you need some parts, give ray a call.
  12. Factory Rubber sub frame mounts which are 20 years old will be pretty shot, when i got my 320i they were nearly torn all the way around, and it was a lady driven auto. Its also good to replace shock absorbers in pairs, Its not recommended to replace just one.
  13. As a cyclist myself and the other half as a horse rider, we frequent out back country roads with long straights that turn into gravel that also don't have any driveways on it. I can not count the number of times i have had to quickly cut off to the side of the road because a driver has gone flying past even at a mere 120 with no regard to who else may be on the road at the time. I do not care if there was nobody on the road because anybody can come out from anywhere at any time driveways or not. If you did 190kmh on a public road it was illegal no matter where or how you did it. end of story. It was irresponsible and you have no way justify it. I respectfully wish you luck with your brake rebuild and hope you can vist the the drags or a track day next time.
  14. I have used the Lucas pads for over a year now and i find them to be as good as any other pad i have used in other cars. They fell better than the pads they replaced. The pads in my car do handle multiple hard stops very well I live near a long straight road and i know, before saying they are rubbish perhaps they are perfectly fine. Sure they are not an expensive high performance pad, i would suggest you would have exceeded the limits of many normally available off the shelf pads not specially for semi motor sport use. However it does not mean they are rubbish for their intended purpose. It Kind of annoys me that your complaining about your brake pads being toast after a nearly 200kmh stop. You have to say its probably quite a job for any brake pad to do that when it wasn't designed with that in mind. I'm not trying to bait an argument here, just my 2c worth
  15. Changing Pistons rings can turn into a total engine rebuild quite quickly if the job is to be done right. Piston Rings should only be replaced if the engine block is cleaned and honed. By this stage you also need a new head gasket and a lower gasket set, and you might find that the main and big end bearings need replaced too. Not forgetting that Most engines which need rings probally also need a new cambelt water pump and tensioner. Not to mention if the valves are seating correctly which should all be checked as these all affect how well the engine runs. I'm sorry to say you might be in for at least a $1000 if the engine does not have an otherwise good service history.( ie rebuilt head & new waterpump and cam belt ) Just my 2C
  16. Hi Guys After a late night and early morning today finishing "E30 V8" with riley. I followed him out to Ruapuna and took a couple of snaps. here are the ones that didn't turn out fuzzy I'm hoping Mike can post some of his pics here and CrazArab might even have a few shots to put up as well. The M5 & M6 v10's were Great CrazArab did some mean driving making sure everybody heard his tire squeel and the dirty old ford falcon showed what it could do as well !

  18. Why not Tasteful upgrades to the 318IS Brakes, suspension engine - but still working with what you have high quality Springs, shocks, urethane bushings, really good brake pads and rotors, headers, new camshafts, rebuilt higher compression engine. That would be a really fun car then. and all without losing any of what it makes it a 318IS a lot of that list above would be parts possibly needing replaced anyways, a rebuilt engine is a good thing. and things like Good quality Headers won't de value a car like that either, i think it would be better than a 325 if all that was done.
  19. I have Question on the M3 trailing arm tabs being on the struts. ( mentioned in the article above ) Is it possible to have these mounting tabs welded to a standard E30 325 front strut & use a standard 325 19mm swaybar with the M3 links to avoid buying an expensive new front sway bar ? Thinking along the lines of, tabs could be manufactured easily, i know a good welder & if the only thing i had to order was the links from bmw it would not cost a lot to get the better performing swaybar setup ?
  20. I would just like to ninja in there and point out a larger well sized turbo will generate less heat and be more efficient for the engine. Huge emphasis of well sized/selected whatever you call it.
  21. From your first post... "The motor will get to operating temperature, but the water in the coolant tank stays stone cold. It then gets to a certain point, where all of a sudden it comes back up through the pipes and pushes all the hot water out of the expansion tank. I cant see any water circulating. - I find these symptoms very weird, especially with the water in the coolant tank not getting hot at all ( until it gets forced back, thats when the hot VERY hot water gets pushed out ) It will build up a lot, and the bleeding screw will whistle like a kettle on a stove, even once I turn the motor off, it takes a while for it to stop whistling. If when the motor is off I then remove the expansion tank cap, the water gushes out and all pressure is released immediately." My car did this to me after it got up to temperature, it got close to but not on RED on the temp gauge then all of a sudden pushed all the water out. The temp rose in a fairly sudden burst. I then did a full head rebuild and gasket set and this issue was solved, i found on my head gasket it had not been sealing at cylinder 6 and you could see where the gasket was damaged and allowing gasses to enter the water system. I had no oil in water what so ever with my M20B20 I did not use a genuine Thermostat, and my engine did bleed correctly. My engine always run at 1/4 temp warm with 3 different thermostats. One thing i have always done while the head has been off on an engine is get the air compressor into all the coolant channels and give em a good blast, where a surprising amount of crud comes out and hits you in the face.
  22. Most Bilsteins can be rebuilt It may be a good idea to get the part numbers & call a few places to see if they can do it. I think Autolign do shock rebuilds, there are a few members on here who have had custom bilstein rebuilds perhaps one can chime in ?
  23. Supercharger needs LVVTA certification mind you technically so does a 2.5 or 2.7 conversion-but nobody can tell the difference with those.
  24. I do agree CamB ( especially after going in Rileys Car ) but at least he didn't modify up a really nice 2 door 325i For all we know he had the car given to him with a blown motor and already had the Holden donk sitting there in his garage.... So if it goes better than a 318i auto hasn't he done well by default ? Isn't there a supercharged version of that Holden 3.8 ?
  25. You might even like your car lowered with the 14" wheels, i know i did
