Probably not. The types that instigated this particular law rehash would have no interest in doing what they do in a controlled environment. Its the lack of control, the drinking, the unsafeness, and illegality that is the attraction more so than the act of doing a burnout. Although I support the creation of such places (as I would possibly use them myself), I do not think it would fix the problem. Jail time might. Imagine if your mate got six months for doing a burnout? You wouldn't even consider it. Obviously this would be for second or third time offenders as the penalty would to some extent outweigh the crime otherwise. The problem I have is the more these idiots act like idiots, the harder the laws get, and therefore the more restrictive it is to do anything legally. Most of the time it is the law abiding citizen who must be inconvenienced or attract costs to ensure they follow the laws put in place to stop those that are flaunting them anyway. So far noone in government has made any suggestions that would specifically target the problem without bringing in a bunch of collateral casualties in the form of car enthusiasts who are doing their best to enjoy their cars they way they want (usually fast, sleek, loud and expensive) whilst staying within the law. Why are the police not rounding all of the people at these illegal drags and arresting as many as they can for disorderly offences, alcohol-related offences, public nuisance and so on. A powerful law with dire consequences has little effect if there is a low chance of being charged with it. One more thing - I hate how in nz there seems to be this idea that to maintain control, we must continually place additional restrictions on citizens - why not just punish those that break the existing restrictions harder? All the new laws will do is create more work for an over-worked police force. How about we take peoplse licenses off them quicker and lock them up if they continue to offend. Fuller jails, but less offending and less offenders = less work for the police.

Yes but I'd seen it before - IIRC Hammond drove it, thought it was going to be a girly hairdressers car like the Z3, but loved it, and thought it was way better than the Z3.

Pretty good - Managed to get Keitis pulled out so we could remove the motor. 3rd gear, lots of revs, diff lock, chain from car to tree and car to tractor, drop clutch, go! Repeat about 6 times. All good. Worth asking.

Comments make some good points. What happens if the car is stolen or on finance? You can't be crushing a stolen car or a car the finance company owns. Boy racers will just tick up all there cars (aren't they all anyway???). Car can't be crushed as the finance company has a lien on it, and there is no way the govt would get away with destroying loan collateral. Cool shredder though.

The plate is one of those perspex euro plates from the internets. I got one almost exactly the same for my old 320.

When I was about 13 I really wanted an XJ6. Went off them as I got older once I realised they were probably something your grandad would drive. I havn't rated Jag as a brand since then until today when I was at a mates place and her Mum has an S Type. Looked the biz sitting in the drive, and it has a 220kw 4.2L v8! Yeah it's auto, yeah the interior is more plastic than I'd expect from Jag, but when I went on Trademe to have a look you can pick up a 2002 model with less than 50,000kms for just over 20 grand!!!!! Higher kms ones are only asking $16k!!!! I won't be buying one, but wanted to open Jaguar up for discussion as a brand. So discuss.....

^^^ agree with everything said above - get maintenance sorted, get suspension sorted (springs, shocks, bushes), convert to manual if you have an auto - best mod ever! - then if you still have $$ later on upgrade to 2.5l. You will spend more on the 2.0 getting 2,5l power out of it than swapping the entire motor. The great thing about 6 cyle e30's is that everything is plug and play between the 2.0 and 2.5l. Just swap them out and drive away.

Even e30's with OBC have the adjustable speed limit warning bell! Linking fines to income is quite fair Ali. Linking fines to the type of car you drive is not. If you earn $200k a year, a $600 fine isn't going to deter you too much. If you earn $18k a year it'll cripple you. Fines need to deter all people equally, hence relating them to income. It would be a difficult system to administrate, and will have some downfalls, but its not as unfair as you say. Personally demerits deter me more than any fine. That said, the current demerits system is fairly penalising - you can't get away with much before you lose your license - so I don't think it needs to be made any tougher. Same with the boy racer legislation - breaking traction etc all comes with license loss and impounding. The problem is they then go out and drive with no license. Sale of the car would be a fairly good deterrent. That said, the odd cop already uses existing legislation to their advantage. My sisters BF was picked on by a cop. He hadn't broken the law, but the cop thought he'd seen him driving (was actually a different car altogether). Cop impounded his car and suspended his license on the spot. By the time the court day (defeneded hearing - first 2 appearance pleaded not guilty) came around he already had his license and car back (minus 28 days of getting lifts, trouble at work, and impound costs). The court ruled in his favour and he didn't have to pay the accompanying fine and had the charges wiped off his record and license, but he didn't get any compensation for his expenses which by that stage also included a lawyers bill. Under the old legislation he would have had to go to court BEFORE they could take his license or car. So even if the above cop was certain that he had the right man (and we assume he did, and wasn't just being a d*ck) as with all law some get a pretty rough time of it. I can already see headlines of the wrong car getting crushed!

Yeah, that was my pie in the sky budget. Might pay a tad more for e30 as I can use parts off it, and have spares if we "injure" it.

I'm not so sure. If an insurer fails to pay out because traction control was permanently disabled, then they could easily refuse to pay out if it was temporarily disabled using the factory switch. Which is bollocks. To me, its a grey area and you won't get a definative answer here. My opinion is that 1) It would be very difficult to PROVE that the disablement CAUSED any accident (rather than just contributed), and 2) the fact you can disable anyway would make it very hard for any insurance company to win a case that they are not liable. Just because they refuse to pay out does not mean they are either right or within their rights. You have the right to appeal. I have appealed several insurance claims and have generally had positive results from such appeals where the insurerwas playing hardball and was outside their rights. Also, as you state, just because the simple act of pulling the sensor out will cause a fault in the Canbus train, does not mean that you cannot "trick" the system. Modern cars are made more complex by electronics, on the other hand, as is constantly proven, there is nothing electronic you cannot fool given enough time and knowledge, (and sometimes $). I concede Glenn knows his stuff, but what is generally considered possible, and what is actually possible with the right amount of willpower and ingenuity can be very different. I say give it a go, and if it works, any insurance company would stuggle to win a case based on the above plus the fact that you could always claim you had no idea that the modification had been done - we're talking civil law here - you don't have to prove beyond reasonable doubt!

Prefer 6cyl e30, but would take anything RWD and manual and running with no driveline issues. Doesn't have to be BMW. Auckland north. Must be cheap. Rust and body damage OK.

A couple of months ago a 330i motorsport in MANUAL didn't sell on TM for about 2 months at 21k. Put it on $1 res and it sold for high teens. Asking price on TM is in no way an indication of how much they are selling for. Not everyone buys cars through TM either. Nice looking bit of metal, but nothing special and estimate is in my opinion about fair market value if its in very good cond.

Maybe it doesn't understand you because you're so used to speaking Japanese, not German??? Check the rubber bush on the steering linkage between the firewall and the rack - these are prone to failure. Maybe its about to break. Otherwise play in the rack ends or ball joints. It's rack and pinion, should feel pretty direct.
