I think this comment here has got a lot to do with why they prefer RWD vehicles - it's likely to do with how vehicle dynamics come into play while a vehicle is loaded, with XX kg in the boot, & potentially 4 persons in the cabin, not just during pursuits, but also during responsive, & evasive situations. Plus in amongst it, the vehicle also needs to be a 'large' type sedan, to have it as suitable for being used when the guys are running ops in 'full kit'. One of the main differences between FWD & RWD vehicles, at a very basic level, is FWD 'pulls' the unit along the road, whereas RWD 'pushes' it. For maybe a working perspective on that from a police view, imagine American police trying to do a PIT manoeuvre with a FWD police unit, on another vehicle that is a similar or heavier weight - wouldn't work too flash, as during the 'touch', weight is being transferred off the driving wheels.

Anyone know this car (Black 540i E34 in Auckland)
Phil-540i replied to Kodachrome's topic in General Discussion
Theres a green 1 too, less boganised, 175kms, super tidy looking, that gets listed from Otrahonga (???) occasionally for 5.5k........... -
Personally, given the age of your vehicle, & the future life ahead of it - I'd just suck it up & go genuine. Do it once, do it right sorta thing. Even if you buy the genuine bar / wiring kit, & get Ray or some-one similar to fit it. Or lean on your dealer for a better price, as getting towards 2k is probably starting to take the pi$$ a bit IMO........... IMO, its something that really 'needs to be right' - its being bolted into critical structural points on your vehicle. Genuine bar will be a perfect match for the vehicle, & will be designed for the vehicle's MTM rating - you can't really go wrong, even if its a bit dearer.

Under H & S legislation, I can guarantee it won't be Great Walls they get, & personally - I hope they get something half decent - they deserve it!! True, in that there are already Hyundai speed camera vans, & also the odd Hyundai mufti unit being used...... Yes, the new Mustang is going to get a huge nudge at being a proper 'world car' - should have good success at it too I predict...... Internal Police policy that general duties / pursuit type police vehicles in NZ have RWD or AWD as preferred spec - its been like that for years for some reason. Which is bit weird, as MOT had no issues with using Sigma GSR turbos, & also V3000's back in the day - both of which would go wrong side of 200kph as mufti units, bit under that when as black & whites with drag of lightbar taken into the equation. I personally think spec of them having to be RWD is an outdated policy that should be updated to reflect the advances that have been made in vehicle technology since that policy was implemented. IMO, Our boys in blue generally do a great job, & I'll forever back them having the best gear to do that job to the best effect......

Yea, true, bar truck fleet doesn't come into NZ through Nissan NZ, which I suppose in some ways is a bit like Toyota with Hino........funny bit is Hyundai is preferred / directive car for lots of Government depts., inc Defence Force at the moment........
-
Sounds kinky @ multiple levels already, particularly when coupled with your subsequent 'SUCCESS"....................

Service bulletin #857c, states that figure of oil consumption is within factory spec, & helps prevent exhaust rusting. Has your service misadvisor not pointed that out to your people..........??

I agree with Andy - they'll fill the gap with something. Bit like Ford in the states with the Police fleet - they've finally done away / are doing away with the Crown Vic Poooooolice Cars, & have a Taurus all set to replace them in Police spec, & all around - its probably not a baaaad unit (well, in context, for something Yank made anyway...) with AWD & turbo V6 being part of the package on some Police spec. Its highly likely that this vehicle, & also Mustang, in some sort of incestuous over-priced under marketed formats, will be what replaces Falcons on this side of the world. GM will do the same with some sort of rebadged love-child from Daewoo or Opel probably, & then we'll probably end up as screwed as what the EEC is in terms of GM vehicles........... Holden has the right idea at least, in terms of its LWB Commerdoor platform gets exported to the States as a brilliant Police vehicle in its own right - apparently the American boys in blue just love them. With GM condensing its range in America a few years back, is there any odds they've actually got anything half decent that would transform to RHD spec from there anyway.......??? Do I see BMW police vehicles in NZ police future - No..............Commercial vehicles, including light trucks, are also part of NZ Police procurement, so it'll probably go to whoever can do best deal on the biggest range of vehicles. Toyota has a foot in the door with NZ Police thesedays, & its highly likely they could actually supply a half decent Commodode replacement - Hilux in diesel or V6 format would see utes done, Hiace for vans, Highlander into Captiva replacement, & Toyota tieup with Hino trucks sees light truck fleet covered off too. From an economic, & ease point of view, Toyota would cover it all off quite nicely if its objectively thought about & processed without tunnel-vision........

How many revs do we want our streetable 6 cylinder motor to be pulling do ya reckon...........even on high revving motorbike motors theres usually always another gear to grab.............
-
Nah mate, just think of it as yet another way of keeping chlorine in the gene-pool - it'll be fine. And Trademe won't give a rats a$$ so long as they're getting their fee.......

So technically, its not really that hard for the Midnight spares boyz to be grabbing a set of rims off a 7 series then ae Heres a wee hint - if you like the rims your car has got on it, probably be a great idea to get some good quality aftermarket lock nuts for it - not BMW ones........

Phil-540i replied to johnythefish's topic in General Discussion
Well yes, true, but generally at 250+kms of typical abuse, its probably fair that something gives in the chain - ones that are looked after properly still do silly kms without much grief or headaches though really.......... -
Matts got the right idea - seller needs kicked in the nuts, twice. Once for 'thinking of the idea', & the 2nd time for actually carrying it out / marketing it........... In conjunction with aftermarket seats, & certification - yes. To pass a WOF - umm, no - fail.........
-
I like it, lots. M4, bit less so.............dunno why, maybe its cos I think utes are the only things that have 2 doors, who knows.......... Appearance wise, it smacks of reminding me of a E39 M5 somehow.............its bit like the M3 has grown up a bit really. And I agree with Graham's comments, particulary the last 2 lines............you'd just drive it, lots, hard..............
-
Hmm, how could this get any better?? Oh, I know - video then drops into Sabine Schmitz links...................bugger........ Now all we need is her having a skid in the new M3...............
-
Opps, my bad - controversy, again - like how does this happen............??!! Anyway, the radio news was implying it was all to do with the Commerdoor being dropped, & something to do with Holden concentrating on V6 engine production somewhere other than Aussssstraaaaalia for its replacement........... I like some of the above posted logic though - there is a place for it in my world..............
-
News on the radio @ 2pm, is saying the plebs @ 'V8 Supercars' have finally twigged that there may be a slight problem ahead in their future............. Its ok though - apparently the cure is 'We're thinking of dropping the V8 part out of the name & maybe open the series up a bit'...............like, duh - you're gonna have a choice in it anyway............
-
Great advice^^^^ & I agree 100%............it just needs gone through with a fine tooth comb by some-one who really knows what they are doing. If they don't find much wrong with it, it's probably not bad value for money. If however some 'major stuff' doesn't get picked up, its probably got the potential to suck money outa ya quicker than blonde twins on a Queen St corner on a Friday night.......
-
Oh yummy...............that's just awesome looking, with the performance to match. Even looks great in that colour. Its got that whole 'don't f#ck with me' look going on about it, like its been sent off to the gym & taken a coupla bottles of steroids & tuffen up pills while there......... Ticks the boxes for me anyway............. Price tag probably won't though, haha.

Ahh, the 1KZTE cracked head issue??? They do it regulary for some reason - poor heat dissipation, restrictive exhaust, intake restrictions, etc etc.....all doesn't help. -

Coulda been a UK import one - I've heard theres the odd one from the Motherland that whines a bit, but can be easily fixed when exposed to right amount of Kiwi updated programming........ -
Seems to be a common theme with them ae, at least this one hasn't done 200+ kms though I suppose..........
-
This is so gorgeous - you guys have done yourselves proud, bigtime!! Pics just make me grin - lots of good karma involved in this project - may it all be returned to ya one-day...... And its got the 'right' motor in it...............
-
Looks sweet really - whatcha gonna buy next...........??
-
Lols, yea, I'm well used to taking the team hits for lots of $hit that aint my fault................. I'm just 'lucky' like that......... I'll sell it nother way @ ya then - after XX?? yrs married, does she with the frypan still expect to be getting round in $20 gymshoes, or have her tastes evolved a little bit upwards...........your little beasty car that does so many kms a week is much the same - after 600,000kms, it wants some blingy feets too......... You can tell I'm in sales ae, ice----------------------------------------->eskimo's is a breeze.........
