So on a drive to dinner tonight a rather strong smell of fuel filled the cabin when stopped at traffic lights. Recently, A fuel smell has been present on start up for a few weeks but clears as i drive off. this stronger smell while driving is a bit of a concern especially with the kids in the back. I'll be pulling the back seat cushion up today to check for leaks around the top of the pump / sender units as this seems quite common based on my quick googling last night.
  2. i think some pics of aformentioned dream care would only be fair ....or can we see those over on NZHondas forum

  6. Yup, my e46 was the same when I did mf on that too mate.
  7. Hi Colin, no it doesnt mate, it's odd that it on build sheet but not in the car, hence my thinking it already wired.....i have the build sheet also another thing on the build sheet that isnt what i have currently is the wheels, the BS says 0788 LA wheel, but the car has the factory option Style 42's that i am told have been on the car since new, and it says provisions for CD changer but this is actually fully installed i'll check fuses today and also try to source another mf panel for testing @hqstu what is this dummy you speak of
  8. My car is a 2001 build date, both new and old wheels have dual stage airbags New wheel is from a 2002 m3 as attached. It was working when removed from the car. I suspect lack of wiring but will do some further testing, if the pins are working in the slip ring, I should be able to get a multimeter reading off it.

MF wheel with paddles project coming along slowly. have new bottom trim peice for the wheel and new airbag, had the one that was sold with it double checked and it's a recall one. As my car had already had the check ot wouldn't apply pist fitting so just bought a new one. Latest challenge is the functionality and wiring of the MF and paddle shift. I'm no good at electronic work and even though the car build sheet says it is wired for MF plugging the MF panel in to the existing slipring, which should be compatible shows no activity for cruise control or audio. So looks I need to get a retro fit wiring kit, they are in very short supply from BMW given the age or have someone help custom make the MF harness and paddles connections.
  10. Into the clock spring behind the airbag. There is a female port for it. Same as other clock springs. Has 3 ports. Left is blank, middle is airbag right is mf
  11. My understanding is that no coding is needed, based on the attached. As even if adding wiring, no coding. So I think it's actually missing the wiring. Hmmm Cruise & MFSW retrofit.pdf
  12. I have a "standard" steering wheel in my e39(2 stage airbag), am going to swap in a 3 spoke M Sport wheel with multifunction. my build sheet says the car was prepped for multifunction, however, as a test to check this, i released the air bag (not fully removing) and plugged the MF panel in, no fuctions are working. Have i missed anything obvious here? I beleive the slip ring should be compatable from factory but only work if the wiring is benhind it... or Im guessing my build sheet is wrong?! edit; next steps is to try and source the retro fit wiring kit or enlist some help in making one based on the BMW diagrams, i'm an eletrical luddite

While in was doing the headlight job a couple of posts ago I noted one of the air con tubes into the cabin had a huge crack in it. Now we are at level 3 I felt safe enough to get a part of sort this out. 2and hand air con tu e arrived from a TM seller this week for a very reasonable price. fitted it today. I noted the foam gasket on the replacement tube wasnt as good as the one i was replacing, some careful cutting, cleaning and gluing later and old gasket in place and tube fitted to car. Aircon feels way better now especially since the other tube was loose and fixed too.

Did a spot of cleaning on the E39 today. Inspired by a mates efforts on his M3. Rear lights were removed, exposing several layers of gunk. Cleaning was done by Chemical Guys all purpose cleaner, clay bar, detailing brushes. Finish protected by Chemical guys wax, and quick detailer.

The lockdown really gives one time to get to the little things! Today I Took a razor blade (Gillette mach 3 to be exact) to my pilled MSport seats in the E39. Working slowly I got rid of all the fluff on the passenger's side front seat. Quick wipe down with some interior cleaner and it looks far less scruffy and a lot newer. I'll do the drivers side where needed, after the seat is repaired with new material and new foam.

Detailed the car this weekend, was supposed to be in Tokaanu for bmw annual festival but couldn't make it. 2 bucket method, chemical guys citrus wash, 2 foam soaks with bug remover mixed in. Fireball Hydrophobic treatment, then into the garage for a wax and trim blacken. Took the caliper covers off too, from previous owner. While I liked the silhouette the shite plastic was broken on all 4, and ultimately quite ricey. Was going to have drivers seat repaired next week, with new foam, material for the out bolsters. Thanks to the virus that will have to wait. Small price to pay to keep us all safe!!
