Problems with the starter pinion meshing with the flywheel like you say. You'll have to pull it out to see weather its the pinion or the flywheeel thats worn.

None of the part numbers on the gbox I have match anything I could find. Its a ZF S5D320Z for 328/M3 M50 box might be ZF S5D310Z? Same ratios as far as I know. Apparently strong as all buggery! I use Redline MTL If its of any use.

Reasonably cheap new from BMW. You need the brake pedal as well as the clutch pedal. Might as well replace all the bushings at the same time. Have a look at the on line ETK (stickied in gen discusion) for a blow up diagram. You can do without the overcenter helper spring if you dont mind a heavier clutch. Both pedals hang of the same bracket auto or manual.
