Bulletproofing an M50/Turbo
conrod replied to Surge's topic in Forced Induction & Performance Tuning
Yes the early vanos engines are just an on-off type affair, so pretty much any ECU will be able to control it. Engine build/spec. depends entirely on how much boost you want to throw at it and what your hp expectations are.Thicker headgaskets are not a good way to go, sure they drop compression but you also lose the "squish band" in the combustion chamber. And as Andrew suggested, read Corky Bells "Maximum Boost" if you haven't already. -
Bulletproofing an M50/Turbo
conrod replied to Surge's topic in Forced Induction & Performance Tuning
M52's use one step switching of the inlet cam solenoid to control vanos- so Link would be okay. Only the later M52's used vanos on both cams (M52TU fitted to E46's) S50 used stepless control of vanos, so a more spohisticated ECU is required. M50 has no vanos- which engine is yours? -
I have seen pistons that have been nickel plated on top, supposedly very good at stopping detonation from blowing though. I think you will have oil squirters fitted to this engine anyway, which lower the piston temps. Injectors will need uprating,as they are marginal on the std engine, but why change the fuel rail?- it is quite a nice piece and the FPR runs at 5 bar on these engines which is also nice.

Only one chocolate fish to give away- and the winnner is ............................................................................................................................................................................ Craig! Well done, your chcoclate fish will be posted out to you shortly!

very good, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, then this video must be worth, well, a whole heap! BTW, contrary to the video, the pistons aren't bolted to the crank and then shoved up through the bottom! And how many trainspotters can tell me what engine that is? (and yes it is an actual production engine) Chocolate fish to the first 10 correct answers, on the back of a postcard............

What about the original Rover V8 coupe? That was a four door (very similar profile to the Chrysler 300C) One of the translations of the word "coupe" meant "lower roof" and made no reference to how many doors were fitted.

You got those two old codgers from the cheese ad running it?

Active Autowerk do a RHD M3 turbo kit from memory, the guy from AA even posted on here a a year or so ago with the relevant info. Not cheap, but quality never is! cheers Conrad

A set of new M42 JE forged pistons, rings and pins. These are made for an NA engine, and run one compression ring, for less friction. New in original box and wrapping, a bargain at $500. A set of E36 M3 F&R springs, $100 for the set, pickup only for these. Conrad 09 4435344 or 0274 901865

Don't fit an ammeter to your car, especially not a cheap one! The very nature of an ammeter introduces potential for problems, and I have seen many of them fail, the results anywhere from no charging to very burnt wiring. Trust me on this!.............

I use Direct Broking's online service for sharetrading- they are excellent to deal with, good information on their website, market depth (always works unlike some!) good charts etc. Real people who answer their phones and can give you answers to whatever you throw at them. They also offer various funds you can invest in.

I'll be there next year!.................

And thought you were falling in love with "salad girl"- the 6 ft blonde thing at Ruapuna!!!..........................

Is it a small or medium case (4 bolts on the side bearing retaining plate or 6?)

Yep, you guys have pretty much hit the nail right on the head, locking out the vanos loses bottom end power. It is normally done when fitting high lift/long duration cams to a race car, and negates the need for an otherwise much more expensive ECU to drive the vanos solenoids. Also, the Vanos can be a bit unreliable on a race car, and an S50 one costs $2K to replace! Usually just done on a race car with gearing that will keep the engine in the upper rev range (close ratio box in other words) Carbon airbox and A/N will gain 10-15 hp on an S50 (for a LOT of money!)
-
Not recommended- the lead will block the cats and leave you with a serious lack of power and a huge bill to replace them. Talk to Gavin at Hi-Velocity, he is importing some new software and equipment that will work with these cars, a reflash of the ECU gives about 10-15 KW and improves drivability. Other than that, engine mods are expensive and difficult, spend the money on suspension, brakes, wheels or whatever, the engines are that good from the factory that the average person will not see easy HP gains.cheers Conrad Hi Velocity 09 442 4451 021 483 562

BUGGER! I hope they can drag it out of there, BBS have been a huge part of worldwide motorsport over the last 30 or 40 years, and have been a prominent partner of BMW in that time, in both motorsport and road car wheels. I was about to price some wheels for my race car from them! Oh well- fingers crossed!
-
Yep thats the one! I don't know him personally, and when I last saw it about a year ago he wanted $3K for it, $1800 is much better though.
-
I might know where there is a bigger one, an M90 I think. It came off a Jaguar V8, had some nice little water/air intercoolers etc. I can find out if you like.Probably be a bit more than $780 though!
-
That s a sharp deal, they are about $2500 new, and much better than a centrifugal blower like a Vortech.

I saw a White 850i last week on a dealers yard in Matamata, under $20K but just driving past so didn't stop to check it out. There was a NZ new 840i 6 spd in red,on TM a week or two back, NZ new, a real minter with low K's, asking $58K for it though. Fabulous cars, have all the makings of a future classic IMO.

I stand corrected! Engine ID number will still tell you what it is. Unless it is an M3 then I would go the 2.8 engine, I sold one about 6 months ago for $2500, nobody was really interested in it at the time though, it ended up being a replcement for one somebody had cooked due to all of the water falling out!...................

easy enough to identify, it should be a cast iron block for one (and there were no cast iron vanos engines apart from US ones) and the engine number stamped on the block will be a giveaway too, somebody on this site has posted a link to identify your engine. Still sounds like a good deal, if it is genuine.

looks like the same engine for sale again on turd me- what happened???!!! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/C...on-84214591.htm
