A Variant was our family car (same colour exactly) when I was a kid. Had it from mid 70s to early 80s then we 'upgraded' to a white Mk II Escort s/w. Edited September 20, 2013 by jeffbebe

This was identical to my first car (except mine was a 63'). The Rover 100. I was 15 and just didn't quite care for it as I could have. In 1981 I crashed it into a rambler rebel driving down Mt Victoria (Devonport AKL) full of my yobo mates. I sold it to a local (cunning old man) with a backyard garage. Seen it 6 months later looking mint. Quick cash sale and off to the pub was good enough for me, back then. The rambler was worse off...ha!

Not my actual car, but the closest pic i could find on the Net.

1977 Leyland Mini 1000s. Essentially a lower powered version of the aussie 1275GT. High back seats, 3 dial dash, chrome lift up door handles, similar flares as in the photo and 10" Jelly bean mags. Bumpers were chrome, and it had the outside door hinges. Otherwise almost identical.

Spend more time parked up on the front lawn than on the road. Ended up selling it for $500 with a completely collapsed right hand CV joint.

2.5 litre, 4 cylinder petrol, no power steering .... Rear wheel drive Manual!

I learned to drive in this thing, it was such a tank, but awesome.

Possibly Graham... It leaked oil, leaked water, had tuning issues, wasn't reliable, kept shearing L/H axle keys due to play in the axle... I carried spare keys. The only chicks it pulled was ones who felt sorry for you because you owned a lemon. Not much has changed really. BMW owners still continue having these issues.

First car I had to drive, and learnt in was a Mk3 Escort - 1.3L, much like this one below. My old man bought it for me and my sister to "share", it was a Terracotta brownish colour and was extra special as it had "Benetton" stickers on it.

When it became obvious my sister was going to get to drive the Escort much more than I was, I went out and bought my very own car... a Hillman Avenger GT, the early type with the twin round headlights like this one..

Except mine was red on the bottom half, and white on the top half with a big webasto sun-roof that folded nearly the whole way back.

I like to think of it as a high performance weapon - it had twin Weber 40 carbs, extractor manifold, straight through exhaust, but I think all it did was drink petrol and turn it into noise.

There is a picture of me with the actual car kicking around here somewhere, but as I am about 18 years old and wearing a Marillion t-shirt and marble wash jeans I think it can stay hidden for a while.

At 15, I'd saved enough that I brought a 400cc trail bike, so started with that on-road. (Picture me as 'Southland farm-boy at the time, living rural, lots of gravel roads....) so first car was @ 16, as apprentice mechanic. There was a place called 'Overbridge Motors in Invercargill, that used to sell the most trashed pieces of $hit that could still move under their own power - hence I got a 1972 4.1 auto XA Falcon. Now, this thing had had a harrrd life before I got it, think of it as mother-in-law ugly (it was already covered in 'crash paint / primer), & emitted more smoke than a Bob Marley jam session - I had a rare 2 stroke Falcon!! But, in its favour, it came on 8 inch Tridents, 235/60R14 Firestone Wide Ovals that still held air, & the coup-de-grace - was already fitted with a set of Dukes of Hazzard air horns........

Motor got replaced in 2nd week of ownership - (stripped it down to find 4 of 6 pistons cracked.......), & was sold about 8 months later tracking a bit funny in the rear due to it having an argument with a stump in a paddock.......

Replaced with a 'tweaked' 120Y SSS ex circuit / rally car........that had been rolled before I got it - $120 to get it back on the road, & probably still remains as most fun vehicle I've owned....

I've owned it since I was 17, still do, and hate it. 12 years and 80,000 kms has done nothing to forge any sort of bond with this car, it is an appliance, nothing more. To give it it's due it's cost me virtually nothing in unscheduled maintenance and has never left me stranded, a claim I cannot make of my beloved E39!

My first car. 1988 1.5L Mirage GLX Manual (cyclone!!111!) Bought it off my sister when I was about 16 after she pulled out in front of a ute and mangled the front up a bit. Had belonged to my grandmother before then, who bought it brand new. See front fender damage in the pic. With liberal use of a crowbar a new $15 headlight was fitted, and we were good to go. Gave me a few years of faithful service.

Replaced with the crusading Camry. 2.2 Manual, with 16" Reflexs and oversized tyres, for ultimate cruising/gravel road ground clearance. Bought for $3700, sold for $3800 60k and four years later. Fantastic car.
