e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 10, 2017 (edited) Just a little update as i managed to grid the bolt that was giving me grief off, got the crank and last piston out and cleaned some other bits. Block is off to get acid dipped cleaned next week. I Will also look at getting the rocker cover powder coated at some point. Any suggestions for a colour? i was thinking white. ZERO i'm looking at either using a Link or Haltec Ecu at the moment and i won't need to run e85 as the compression on this motor is only 10:1. No name user 379 Report post Posted June 10, 2017 Check the rocker covers are not made from mag, learnt that the hard way
zero 1162 Report post Posted June 10, 2017 Great progress. Regarding e85; what I was meaning was if you are going to all the hassle of swapping the whole driveline, converting to e85 is not much more work or cost and gets you cheap horsepower.

Correct E85 does make easy power if you crank the comp ratio, theres min to gain on low comp ratios. Many of my customers use it and its high maintenance for pumps and fuel system, BP98 is great all rounder without the head aches. Applications i like to use it in are turbo and 11/1 + comp great way to keep EGT's down. BP98 & turbo even on the street i can still get away with 30psi and 9/1 , however ive found using E85 making your own is alot more reliable than from the pump i buy it in tins from the supplier for constant rating. e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 Thanks for the heads up CRUNCHY will look into it. As for e85 i'm sure the latest standalone ecu would be able to be tuned for it if that's what you meant ZERO? and it's just going to be my daily driver nothing crazy plus we don't have e85 down this way. Have heard E85 pulls in more moisture quicker so you have a short self life for this fuel which could be a problem for engine parts. I could be wrong on this though. e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 Hey question for you CRUNCHY or anyone else that could help. Is it safe to powder coat the underside of the rocker cover? I noticed when scrubbing excess oil off it, i think it had a light coat of black paint on it. So know it has paint from factory but not sure if powder coating it the right stuff for the underside. Anyone with experience in this keen to shed some light please
polley 916 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 I wouldnt be powder coating the inside.
richard 384 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 why would you risk paint flakes getting in your oil

I etched primed and painted mine on the outside only, powder coat shouldnt come off but the heat they use when doing so i dont like same with mag wheels. treone 649 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 Looks like you may have the wrong model - the conversion should be in something like this: https://www.motormag.com.au/features/1706/meet-the-bmw-x5-lemans-v12 Only kidding - good luck with your build!
e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 Thanks Treone i've seen the video for that beast bloody fly's for a X5. I still have to double check what the valve cover is made out of, but regards of metal do i need to put some sort of paint on the underside at all? Thanks for all the feed back. e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 (edited) so just checked and can confirm that the valve covers are steel as tried the old magnet test and it stuck. My one more question to you all, is it fine to leave the underside unpainted? even though there is oil splashed around so is moisture and heat that may cause rust to appear over time. Any feed back appreciated. Edited June 11, 2017 by e46v12

Any feed back appreciated. leave the insides un-coated, one flake of paint or powder that chips off will be enough to block an oil gallery and kill the motor. If you are worried about rust get them zinc electroplated, then paint or powdercoat the outsides. If you go with white make sure you use a high gloss white, there are matt / satin whites available that will be impossible to keep clean. The powder is baked at about 200 degrees so no problem with steel / ali / magnesium but make sure there are no plastic / rubber clips etc attached, and the best clean up is sand / bead blasting for good adhesion.
e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 Awesome thanks Andrew for the tip on the white. I think the consensus for the cover is to keep it unpainted.
e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 14, 2017 Just a small update, got these back from an engineering mate that had the covers sand blasted for me at his work. Off to the powder coaters tomorrow.
e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 17, 2017 (edited) Hey everyone Managed to get some time this afternoon to get some more cleaning done. A lot of elbow grease to get them pistons looking shiny. By the last piston i had managed to get it cleaned in 15mins compared to my 1st one which i think took 45mins. Gave the crank a light scrub and the end caps. Just have the main bearing caps left to do. Edited June 17, 2017 by e46v12

e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 18, 2017 Just had a quick read of his build there Dave and i feel his pain. Took me 3 1/2 hours for the pistons but didn't polish them up. It is a lot of parts Michael I can't explain it but i enjoy the cleaning. Having a sense of achievement once you look back and can say i did all this work myself instead of paying someone

e46v12 477 Report post Posted June 18, 2017 Hey Nathan i used some degreaser concentrate mixed with warm water, those green scotch brite pads and a nylon brush. Once i got it clean as possible i dried it with the compressor gun and sprayed with a coat of crc. really please how well they came up.
