Ran a clay bar over the E39 this arvo. Does an amazing job and makes it so much easier to buff/clean!

Drank a couple of beers with Martin (breakmywindow) yesterday and prised off the valve covers between swigs. Going to strip and powdercoat them this week. The horrible oxidising magnesium alloy does nothing for my OCD - plus all sorts of crap is flaking off into my engine. By the looks of things the previous owners weren't changing the oil as often as I would but it's not terrible and a fresh change once the covers back in will is a must. Not quite what I hoped to see inside but not the end of the world. Can't really risk scraping it out as it'll probably loosen even more than will then get into the engine and cause more problems. Will flush and change the oil once the covers are back on. Can anyone recommend any effective cleaners that won't do more harm than good? Not about to pull the whole thing to piece to clean it so will try and tidy it up as best I can for now.

Rare it may be, bit of a stretch to call it pretty though have never been able to work out how the surrender monkeys manage to design so many god-awful looking autos!

There`s more money than you think down those parts ( and further South ) Someting to do with Rain, Grass , and Sheep. However the locals tend to be quite restrained about showing it. You would NOT fit in down there driving that.

Check the connections to the indicator bulbs, especially the rear ones. They can corrode, but even a dirty connection can cause a problem. The flasher unit contains capacitors and transistors. A transistor is a voltage controlled switch, and the capacitors fight to prevent changes in voltage (which is why they are used for smoothing in some applications). When used together, the capacitor controls the voltage in part of a circuit, and when the voltage exceeds a certain level it allows current to flow through the transistor. By cycling the charging and discharging of the capacitor, it allows the transistor circuit to open and close. If the speed of this cycling changes, it means something in the circuit has changed, allowing the time for the capacitor charge/discharge cycle to decrease. It could be the flasher unit that is causing the problem. Maybe the alternator and battery voltage is too high (less likely, but easy to check), or the resistance of the circuit has changed. The resistance can increase because of a failed bulb (which you've already checked), or dirty or corroded contacts somewhere in the circuit, including relays and so on. Something else to check is that all bulbs have the correct power rating. The E30 has (I think) standard 21W bulbs.

Retaining Ring Update So neither Beisan Systems or Dr. VANOS have ever seen a VANOS unit with the retainer I have in mine and they don't believe it's stock. Indeed they're amazed I haven't had a spectacular failure with the oil pump floating free and destroying the VANOS unit or worse, jamming the intake exhaust cam sprocket and destroying valves and pistons... So it's clear to me now that somebody else has been in there and I'm inclined to think they screwed up the chain tensioner also... grr. It's not available as an individual part from BMW. Good news is that Raj from Beisan Systems is sending me a spare retainer for the cost of postage only... top bloke, great service. I'm pretty glad I did take the VANOS out now and I'm really glad that Mark noticed something was different to his!

Interesting to see the orange machine parked next to this puppy! It confims the old adage that money can't buy taste. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/335i/auction-684559412.htm
