Just a matter of removing and cleaning hopefully if that's what it is.
-
First thing is to open the bonnet and check and clean the outlet for this area. This is a rubber fitting next to the battery tray, on the firewall. Pull it off and clean it and the hole behind it, make sure when you spray water in the vents that it flows freely out. Then take out the vent on the drivers side, take the wiper blade off and the vent unclips. You should get a good look at the area behind now and see any sign of rust or holes. It may be coming in from the fan area as well, you can get at this by unscrewing the panel with the wiring on the firewall and looking in behind. The other area you need to look at is the battery tray, the recess at the back bottom on the firewall again can be prone to rust holes, remove the battery and sound deadening behind and have a look. Good luck.

According to the bible you need a 240 BMS, MB, or BMT. The gearbox number is stamped into the casing at the front edge of the bellhousing. The number is just a serial number, it is the letters on the end in which you are interested. These 3 sets of letters, either BMS, MB, or BMT, indicate it is from a 320i. Hope this helps.

Yeah, but Mark has a 6 cyl and can't find a suitable box for it, less chance of finding a 4 cyl box to convert.
-
As far as I'm aware Mark, the only difference is the alignment of the bellhousing . they both have the same ratios etc, and the same bolt patterns, but the motors sit on different angles in the engine bay. This means that if you try to bolt up a 4 cyl box in your car it would be on an angle, hits the tunnel, linkages don't fit, I don't think it actually fits in the tunnel because of the angle.
-
Hey Mark, none of the 4 cyl boxes will fit your car, you need a 6 cyl box, pre face or face lift, both work I believe.

Hi, welcome, pics of car please. Idling issues could be ICV, idle control valve sticking, they need the odd clean, or maybe the throttle position sensor under the throttle body may need cleaning?
-
Hey, I've got one from an 84 m10, has had water in it, don't know anymore, whether it goes, you're welcome to it if it's any good to you?

They only have one or the other according to the restoration bible, have a look under the body behind the back door by the rear subframe mount on the passengers side, if you have the external one that's where it is, being an 88, it should be internal, and you should be able to hear it humming when then keys turned over. They changed around the time your car was made, so if you lift the rear seat base out and undo the plate behind the drivers seat under where you took the base from, you should see the top of your fuel tank, and be able to hear when the pumps running, makes quite a noise. One way to check if it's working is to undo the fuel line where in comes into the engine bay, feed the pipe into a plastic bottle and turn the motor over to see if you have fuel being pumped thru, remember it's very flammable, and be careful.

I'd check the rubber donut at the front of the driveshaft and the centre hanger as well.

These things have been around for ages. Test results show very little if any gain, if I remember rightly.
