yea good bang for ya buckapprox $2k for an engine like this. i doubt you couldn't build an 4 or 6cyl engine with this much power or torque for that sort of money.

sounds a bit like the viscous fan clutch is had it . best to get it checked straight away, you dont want to be replacing an engine.

what colour smoke?? black smoke is fuel , white smoke is oil could be valve guides worn allowing oil to drain into the cylinders and fowling the spark plugs. black smoke , could be cold start injector (or normal injectors) leaking excessive fuel into the intake system and wetting the plugs.

one thing i noticed working in the wreckers is that not many of the cars coming in damaged have 4 good tyres on them. most seam to have very bald tyres , or a mix of good and bad , brands or levels of tread etc. so it pays to have good tyres. on one of my cars i have had some cheap rubbish tyres (kingstar) and in the wet it will slide all over the place(i am changing them soon) and on another one of my cars i have goodyear eagle F1's and the difference is huge in the levels of grip in the wet etc and the car doesn't even have very good suspension

try stu's trim in manukau . if you take it out your self (easy job in a 318ti) and drop the hood linning in it would be alot cheaper or just remove it when you get there.
-
that price sounds ok , not many e36 318ti's get fitted with towbars(what woudl you tow with a 1.8l) , so not many second hand ones around. some towbars cost $1000 or more to get fitted on other cars
