I had trouble with my usb to serial adapter too, but after looking around online I managed to get it working reliably. You must first make sure you have the correct driver for your version of windows. This is the one I'm using for my xp pro but is compatible with windows 2000 : http://www.prolific.com.tw/support/files/%...ller_v1.5.0.zip On my laptop (control panel => System => driver manager => Usb device) i can select which com port the adapter uses, and also which com port on the tuning program (mapecu => tools => ecu config in my case). Choose a port below 15 if you can, the lower the better. Doing this fixed my issue. Also you could try PCMCIA to Serial adapter if the above doesn't work. They are by far the most reliable adapting method. Even with a serial port you still need to get the correct driver for it, usually have to install manually (this means uninstalling the incorrect driver first). I spent a long time researching the best method of connection and have stayed with my usb to serial. Since i installed the correct prolific driver for it hasn't faulted me.

The difference between standard e36 (3.1 turns to lock) and z3 (2.7 turns) racks are very marginal compared to the difference between e30 (4.0 turns) and e36. Z3 racks are hard to find and expensive, not a worthy mod in an e36 imo.

I don't trust the USB adapters, as they are fairly unreliable even with the correct driver, hence the need for a direct link via serial db-9. I still want to use it for uni work, that's why I'm interested in the Toughbook as it is also a tablet.

I've been looking around for a laptop with a Serial DB-9 connection, so i can connect reliably to my cars computer. Don't want to spend the world on it though and really cbfd with Vista or W7 as Microsoft annoys the hell out of me. Does anyone have some good ideas for a tough workshop computer? The e30 has a 3.5 bar fuel pressure, and ive gt a RRFPR. Sounds about right, was hoping for at least 450 horsies on 1 bar.

Well i can probably get a warrant with the current NZKW mounts but I wouldn't feel safe at all leaving it as is. So I'm gonna drive it to my welding friend to get some mounting plates welded to the trans tunnel/floor. Don't really want to be driving the car around without a wof at least.
