bmws are very durable if looked after, they arent cheap(in time or money) to own.many bmw owners will spend a lot of time or money maintaning there cars,so buying a 200 000 k bmw may not be filled with the perils of an non maintained 200 000 k car. This is esp true of newer models, remember we are talking about cars that cost well over one hundred thousand so a few hundred here and there is a relatively small ammount of money for someone who can contemplate spending that sort of money in the first place.

just a guess I think Jochen is over there?

the yellow stuff is just a product of electro_ corrosion(my term for it) at the terminals. You can get rid of that with baking soda-water (base) solution that sorta dissolves it.It is acidic though so you need to keep adding your solution until it stops "fizzing" and wash the whole area down with lots of water cos you dont want that stuff lodging anywhere(its corrosive)Once the terminals are nice and clean put everything back together and apply a thin coating of grease or vaseline (to keep the air off) and attempt your jump start.Alternatively you can try giving your battery a good charge making sure it is topped up with water first. However your battery sounds like it had it so it will only be a matter of time before its flat again. In my experience most garages and the AA wont have the correct battery on hand. Its worth getting the proper rated battery for a e39

i dont mind the "auto" part of it but its the disconnected feel you sometimes get that i dont like.Strike that ...detest and thats why a auto has never been in the garage. My day to day driving is not stop go traffic,i might change my mind then.

i got a hella battery from an auto electrician.Dont skimp on the battery, its the basis for a reliable car in the winter.I paid extra for a big hella battery rated exactly as recomended by BMW.But i never had any worries about not being able to start the car even if the parking lights had been on half the night.

runflats are original fitment on this car.A new set of wheels and conventional tyres will be the setup i will go for one day.I have absolutely no other issues with them excpept...price and harsh ride..the pirelliis are much nicer than the bridgestones ride wise
-
fwiw i am gonna get another pair pirellis, they ride much nicer than the bridgestones.I am gonna get them almost 100 each cheaper than xmas time when there were very very options available...so if you have runflats and need some more soon this may be a good time to buy, seems that continental pirelli and bridgstone are the main players.Hankook have them and i also got a price for Khumo

X5 E53 = PCD 5x120, centre bore 72.5mm and M14x1.5 bolt thread. ET 40-45 X5 E70 = PCD 5x120, centre bore 74.0mm and M14x1.25 bolt thread. ET 37-53 not sure this is correct but its the only info i could find that referred to bore size
