WTB: M3 S50 3.0 bottom end parts or whole engine

Hey Geoff - where do you find all these goodies?? Your shed must be a purists wet dream!! Or is it one of those ' I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you ' situations? -
Unusual find! Score!

5 stud lugs mean I could use the OEM 17s I have on the E36, can also step up to E46 330i rotors and callipers if desired. Main reasons I guess are that I have new, good quality suspension in the E36, and IF I were to go down the M54B30 transplant route it makes little sense to buy in all new suspension and brake upgrades for the E30 IF the E36 items would fit. Cert already needed for engine swap so makes sense to do driveline mods on the same ticket. Add to that the possibility of using the medium case LSD I currently use its a case of "Can I make what I already have fit??" as opposed to a how-to. If that makes sense. Seems I'd be able to use sedan front end stuff but I'd have to go for the rear end from an E36ti. So that kills off using my current diff etc. Will give the brakes a flush and call it a day. Ta

Lol, wish I could see the look on her examiners face when you pull up in the M!
-
Moi? Facetious? Never!
-
Probably also easier to make the lines yourself, can't imagine the fittings would be too hard to find. Hell, E36 ones probably use the same thread pitch and diameter!

Can't help with parts but am interested in the flywheel if it's an M20 single mass type Consider it fundraising for the correct flywheel!

Doing an enforced engine swap in my own shed with no time pressures. Getting my first E30 (manual too!) to tool about in which the aforementioned is completed. Watching my toddler grow into a little boy while having fun doing boy stuff. Watching my better halfs baby bump get (much!!) bigger. Having a home and a job that I can support all of the above with. Getting the all clear from the specialists just tops it off!

Thats the bit I was wanting to know - I have a perfectly good E36 sedan here with good Koni / Eibach etc suspension & urethane bushings, 188mm type LSD, betterer brakes etc etc and wondered if they'd mate up to the older chassis. Seems the simple answer is Yes, but with a few buts Have to admit I'm less inclined if I need to accumulate more bits to make it happen!

Didn't know the sedans were different, ta! Ok, not going to be the bolt out - bolt in scenario that I had hypothesised.

Recently I've come into possession of a reasonably tidy E30 318i. As is fairly typical of a 30 year old car it has knackered shocks, seats with utterly buggered springs, tired sounding diff and a a few other complaints which can reasonably be expected of a car that isn't much younger than me. The general ride quality and TERRIBLE brakes have led me to wonder - I've seen a number of people that have grafted E36 driveline components to the older chassis; what are the intricacies of such a swap? Is the E36 ti the only candidate for the rear end? Or does the sedan stuff work as well? Assuming the latter is achievable will the medium case driveline fit in there? I understand (from very little research) that E36 front suspension and brakes can be installed so long as the relevant control arms are used, so that bit seems simple enough. What else do I need to know? Nothing is ever quite as simple as it seems but i'd quite like to know more on the topic. I have the option of an M54 engine swap if the driveline upgrade is feasible, the possibility of a 200bhp-ish E30 that stops and handles as well as it accelerates is rather appealing! Thanks in advance

3.07 & 3.15 will give the most economical fuel figures. 3.46 will give you a nice bump in acceleration but come at a cost to efficiency and top speed. 2.93 is too tall IMO. 3.23 however is my pick for standing acceleration, overtaking and not being impossible at 60mph. 3.07 would probably be fine with the extra torque of the M52

Ooooh, that clutch kit is tempting!!

M20 Head gasket set, where do these bits go?

Little ring might be oil housing bolt seal? Or do the M20s use a screw on type filter? -

big one looks like a water pump seal, dunno bout the rest -
Yup, agree with Polley there. If you have flatties that use the washer more often, run their own heater in room etc etc then suggest they pay a little more towards utilities. There are calculators around that can estimate power, water usage etc so fair allowances can be made. Impossible / bordering on fanaticism to calculate each bill monthly per person but a fair estimation would be reasonable. Have lived with clean freaks (obsessively wiping & disinfecting every surface, even if they hadn't been used / touched / looked at) control freaks (dude would sit there and make a buzzing noise if the pantry door was open for more than 20 seconds, also turned the hot water cylinder off each night so's to 'save power'), flatmates that f**ked at seriously inappropriate times (while entertaining girlfriends parents over Sunday lunch), ones that stole my gear / guitars / beer / cigarettes and a whole other bunch of stuff that I've mostly blocked from memory. Quite glad I'm not in that position anymore.... good luck however you choose to handle it!!

Don't get me wrong, the M6x conversion is pretty cool for keeping it all in-house but I still reckon the LSx is the better choice of engine. (Waiting for the angry mob to shout me down ) M60B40 210kW, 400Nm torque vs 257kW, 470Nm for the LS1. Easier to get manual boxes for too, and a smaller & lighter powerplant. Yeah it's a dinosaur tech yank lump, but good God they're fun!!
-
IIRC LS1 is within cooee of an M50 for weight. Only the early LS's had the iron block. M50 E30s seem to handle ok Though with 350-ish hp and similar torques you'll probably spend most of your time looking through the side windows.....
-
And then another 10 for the bits you've overlooked. LSx are great power plants, light and compact and pretty reliable for what they are. Cheap to extract more power if required and ridiculously easy to find parts for. BUT. I reckon the E30 chassis would need a lot of work to resist the torque on a long term basis. You'd need to make sure the body was 100% rust free before starting and take the time to add strength to the front and rear subframes (particular attention to the rear where the diff will mount), upgrading to a large case (210mm type, LSD would be mandatory unless you want to be marooned in a cloud of smoke) diff etc. At a guess you'll be looking at 5-8k for an engine and auto with loom, add another 2k-ish if you want a manual box; 6k or thereabouts for suspension and brakes that will actually work; and up to 10k for rust removal and reinforcements plus the custom bits you'll need to get the bigger diff and axles in the hole. Don't get me wrong man, I really hope someone does this conversion soon, but my guess is it would be a $30,000 project at the minimum.

Any more info on the M50 stroker? Engine management, cams etc? Nice choice of wheel too

A little surprised there aren't more people stocking these bits locally! Tried TM BMW for a laugh this morning, was told in a less than friendly manner that unless it's an M3 they don't bother stocking parts anymore. Snobs
