Diesel engines... is simplicity, economy and performance possible?
dirtydoogle replied to gjm's topic in Performance
I would say with a generic remap that spec motor would be around the same power as the update like the x5 f/l so should do the trick quite well. Them turbos are spendy, I can buy them for 1.8k genuine... the P/O of my wagon paid ~5k for new genuine unit fitted -

The m57 in my f/l e53 is 165kw/500nm and no doubt the easiest variant to source in nz. Plenty more poke can be had easily. Is not a DPF equipped motor, nor does it have a reliance on EGR. Mine is running EGR delete and no cats and goes pretty nicely. I would recommend one. But stay away from mine -

You could go simple cheap and strong with an isuzu 4JJ1 Can make plenty torque easily. They love a big bunch of boost -

M57 is a monster in comparison to the m51, super strong motor too. M57 has more complex control systems, but not anywhere near as bad as a proper modern diesel -
I'm content with four e36s for the time being

Suspension flies apart, they eat brakes and they rust like crazy. Have seen several break seat backs off without being crashed Not a particularly well built car but they drive okay. Love the Barra though, beauty of an motor with some boost up it

I've always wanted to flip a BA/BF falcon and see how much interior trim removes itself

Did some race car stuff Clean again

Put some new headlight bulbs in the e53. Pretty exciting stuff Something about plus 110 on the packet. Need to sort the contact on the lhr brake/tail light. Classic e53 stuff.

Wow, what a hoot

I managed 12xx on the last tank in the x5 with a wee bit to spare after I did that run to yours/Auckland The range meter only goes to 999 though because it's a dirty German pessimist. My 540 on the boil used just over 45L to go Hastings to Taupo race track... Easy 800km in the work x5 yesterday towing some junk, ticked over 415,000km Some pics for no good reason, took Donald to the beach. And then panicked about rust and went home

You're certainly it's a miss and not broken down engine mounts? The 4 cyl mounts are fluid filled

My e53 is far better inside than that e70 with the same miles My work e53 is also far better inside than that e70 and it has well upwards of 400km on the cleck. Must be kids or fat people

I have an excellent snapon tool for these horrid jobs, works with the majority of motors. It is a very involved job, I would say that quote is reasonable

Decided it is more cost effective to replace the m43 head with a known good one, and faster. Cleaned one of my spare G220s in the dark and wet. Great fun

Hit it with an arc welder to de-calcify

So 25c/km in repairs? Fantastic... What were the larger repairs? I've not had to do any repairs to my X5 in the 8 months I've had it, purchased at 240km now done 256km.

We cook together. It's romantic and stuff. Beef cheek and Guinness pis tonight.

Washed the X5 after work then went for a tootle in Donald.

Where have all the Manual E39 540i's gone?
dirtydoogle replied to treone's topic in General Discussion
We have a manual one for work also, well north of 400km on it, all it does is tow a three axle trailer with two side by sides, it does 100k a year. My X5 was originally HB too, our work one Christchurch I think. The steering was the only let down with my old 540, but you learn to live with it. That m62tu is a total peach though, incredible torque from idle for a small engine -

Should have kept my nz manual msport 328. But the stigma of copying you was greater tham I can handle. I can't see myself selling the X5, nothing put there can replace it. -
I had one the other day where an ignition lead and o2 harness were tied to the exhaust. Worked out well

Correct. Some of the drains were completely blocked down to the block so if I don't bin this pile of junk I'll pop the sump off and clean it out I acid washed the head this evening, and hot washed it. Easy peasy

Doing some crack for dinner

Made some delicious fudge and a nutritional milkshake with the m43 during my lunch break 30 minutes in and I realised my E-torx set is at a mate's. So I haven't taken the head off yet If it has a cracked head I'll probably just park it in a corner and pretend I don't own it, or I could put a manual m44 in it or m42 and it'd still be a pile of garbage I'm doing super well at being an adult and the missus is super happy about this
