I always do it. Its a great upgrade, and not as hard as it looks if you take your time. I always install the anti rattle kit to seeing as I'm in there anyway.

Bitter sweet. Sad that the business is shutting down, but really happy for you and your retirement adventures. Thanks for all the help and advice you have given me over the years.

The odd bargain comes up now and then. You might get lucky at zebra or pick a part and get one for $300. They usually seem to go for around the $800 mark, which is ALOT cheaper than the supercharger kit and gives you more power, more torque, more driveability, and WAY more reliability. It also leaves you room to upgrade the m54b30 if you want, as it is much more responsive to tuning than the n46; http://mywikimotors.com/m54b30/ Just doing the valve stem seals on the n46 (which will need to be done) costs more than buying a m54b30.
-
ow many km's as the car done - that will give an indication. Here is more info on tuning the n42 and n46; http://mywikimotors.com/n46b20/ http://mywikimotors.com/n42b20/ There is a supercharger kit available for this motor but its VERY expensive. Its cheaper to swap in a m54b30 than buy the supercharger kit.

Have the valve stem seals been done? That is one of the more expensive jobs on these engines, and will need to be done as all the valve stem seals fail as the material bmw used was faulty.
-
Yea, agree if you are only doing it for fuel consumption its not worth it. If you are doing it for the other benefits then yes, and fuel consumption is just a bonus. BTW the replacement seals dont fail early like the origional bmw ones do as they use a different material.
-
Yea, each to their own, I've done the vanos seals on all my beemers, and its always been an improvement each time. Smoother, more low down power, better on fuel.
-
If your car has done more than 60k then the vanos seals will be ready to be replaced. The material bmw used fails. I like castrol edge 5w30, but everyone has their personal favorites. Just don't use cheap rubbish.

Yea the fan can go, but more often its on the e39's for some reason. Electric fan conversion for the win.

Its a very pretty car in white -
Is the thermostat conversion kit for lowering the thermostat temp?
-
Vanos seals are worth doing. Use good quality oil and filters, and regular oil changes. Check for vacuum leaks.
-
Personally, I would do hedgehog first, as it will need replacing at some point anyway. I used a cut down torx screwdriver to get it out.
-
Hedgehog is very common failure. Most people say to buy genuine one as the cheaper hedgehogs seam to have a shorter life - some only last a few months. Also its a pain to install so you dont want to do it more than you have too.
-
Nice one. What kind of power are you getting?
-
sorry for my noob question, but whats the m62 oil filter adapter for? Is it because there was not much space when transplanting the m60/m62 engine into a smaller engine bay?
-
Great diy - thanks steve.

Great work! Have you got plans to take her on the dyno?
-
I think this thread will require pics when the wheels are finished.
-
Is the goal to have a rear sump behind the crossmember, instead of a front sump in front of it?
-
Nice. Was that video at Gavins? Have you got a dyno printout for your more recent runs? And a video of the engine running at idle would be great too, to hear the lumpy cams.
