Ah well. At least knowing it'll run solidly in a VM is better than nothing. I've experienced trouble previously getting the right USB hardware to talk through USB on the mac into VMware Fusion and then into my Windows VM (XP OR Win7), and subsequently into the software I was using. Seems I've been doing it wrong. (I mean this sincerely). sounds like it's time for me to get serous and look for a DIS VM and get the proper cable. Very happy to be schooled on this, Dave. Do I need the appropriate (proprietary) cable for my e46 and e60? Or better question is 'what's the right cable to get for DIS on e46 and e60?' Im seeking only diagnosis and possibly mild coding only (options set/unset). I'm naturally cautious, work in ICT, understand systems and will actively avoid bricking my cars through misadventure.

No. The thought of buying a shitty old laptop to keep alive and functioning, along with the attendant troubles of keeping old (read: out of support) hardware/OS/software, running.... well, it doesn't figure in my plans. ? I want something that runs (ideally) under OSX. If that's not available, it's probably a dedicated reader for me. The cable thing is a red herring. You can get OBDII port readers that fire out the signal over wifi or Bluetooth if that's what floats your boat, this kind of solution is popular with phone and tablet users. Phone and tablet use is probably where the market is, so I'm picking that's where the development effort goes! cheers

Driscoll had used green coolant, it was indeed replaced in that big service you had done last year. I only had it changed to BMW coz I'm fussy. I figured the batty wasn't that old (found a new batty terminal cover in the boot), but as I'd managed to flatten it unexpectedly, thought it was better checked out. The car's nearly where I want it; driving very close to a new one. Though my wife did wonder aloud yesterday how much I'd spent on it since acquisition (!) Hell, it was circa $160 or 170k when new. At 10+ years of age and circa 100k miles, cars like that can't be run like a Camry... or if they are, not for very long!

yesterday 159748kms (total distance since acquisition 7,454kms): brake fluid service coolant system flushed replaced green coolant with BMW coolant replaced both halo ring bulbs with new Hella items (I'd had an intermittent fault with one on acquisition, and they were dim) tested battery (healthy) - I'd flattened it a couple of weeks ago, needed to be sure it was good. engine and trans wash (looking to ID source of oil leaks) reset iDrive service computer (recent oil change, cabin filter change, and the brake fluid service). keepng maintenance up to date. Back to Page European late next week to check on status of those minor leaks.

M54? naaaaaaaah. yep, likely both your valve cover gasket (and the corresponding seals around the spark plug wells), and your oil filter housing to block. Also check out that power steering reservoir cap and hoses that you mentioned earlier. Hopefully it's not your sump gasket - they go later. I'd be very happy with that as a runaround, late facelift coupe to boot. Nice buying. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this. You'll be pleased to have that independence to travel around DC and surrounding states without having to arrange a vehicle. happy days.

any engineering tool store will sell you an angle grinder and a cutting disk, to cut a slot in it. Be sure to where all appropriate safety gear. Sorry I know that's not the answer you were looking for. You may be able to carefully measure it up, draw it, and have it CNC machined up? The irregular spacing of the tines indicate there are many key options to this particular wheel set. HTH

Hi Dean, I've used the smart wash. It's okay, you can get a reasonable job out of it... though there's still that issue of the brush on the lance that a previous customer has used on their wheels, or 4x4. Budget about $12. The Caltex touchless car washes get a reasonable finish with no contact/brushes. Caltex Adelaide Road. I've not tried the Chemical Guys product you mention. Couldn't imagine that moving a month's worth of grime from my car, though would be interested to see it in action.
