Not a hard conversion. It was offered as a factory option in S.A. and from Alpina.http://www.e30.de/335e.htm

Do your interior lights come on when you open the door in question? Are all the windows effected? Does opening one of the other doors get them working?

The machanic is probably not just trying to rip you off, he is trying to make sure the problem is fixed permanently. Head gaskets don't fail for no reason. Either your head has warped or cracked from previous overheating or the water passages have corroded away to the point that there is not enough metal for the head gasket to seal against. What ever has caused the problem, it is going to take more than just a new gasket to fix it. Replace the gasket and do nothing else and you will probably be doing it all over again in a month or so. If you get away with just machining the head and a thermostat I would count yourself lucky.

Mine would hold on to first gear until it got warm too. It just got worse and worse. Then 85k torque converter lock failed, next the rest of the gears failed one by one (highest to lowest) until I only had first and reverse. It took about a week to go from shifting perfectly to no shifting at all, I changed the fluid and screen but it made no difference.

Isn't it a proper "plate' type LSD?

Bare in mind Whakatane is only as large as a small Auckland suburb and is as flat as a pancake except for one huge hill. 20 bucks should last all year

Now I'm also wrecking a 1990 facelift 4door........Manual rack, lowered springs, 5speed+all parts to convert from auto etc.
-
Sure, you can have the pedals...........if you buy the gearbox
-
Ive got a M10 1.8 runner (less starter and flywheel)
-
I've got 4 scrap seats, the machanism in one is stuffed. You can take what ever you need from them.
-
I have a 323 radiator. Don't think it will fit a facelift though, but you might want to take a look and give it a try. The upper hose will clash with the dissy on a Motronic engine

This might interest you. http://home.att.net/~jroal/jay/bmw.htm

It's the stock prefacelift 318i Getrag box. Sorry I don't know the model number off hand, anyone?
-
No. Nothing is of any use to a 320 conversion, except for the master cylinder.
-
$100 for the skirts and i'll throw the badge in.....or throw it away. BTW, I think the skirts will only fit a prefacelift coupe. The upturned part at the rear will not match the shape of a facelift wheel arch and would clash with the rear door on a 4 door.
