Michael. 2313 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 So why did they shoot the shark? If someone ventured into the the wild of *insert country* and was attacked by a *insert wild animal* in its natural habitat does that give the authorties the right to kill? Hmnmmm
allan 295 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 (edited) Was under the impression Great White's are a protected species??. Feel for the family concerned over their lose but have to wonder what the person was doing to make the shark attack him in the middle of the day. Also to have fired at the shark possibly hitting it then loosing it wounded that shows great humanity. Have to side with Micheal on this and one stage further. It's your responsibility to make dam sure you have a clean kill or total miss don't leave a wound creature to die in agony. huff3r 347 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Someone gets killed by a shark and straight away we criticise the people who tried to save him? Where is the humanity in that! Come on people, pull your heads in. I'm sure in that situation most, if not all would have done the same. Why does everything have to become a witch hunt all the time? In any wild country, if an endangered animal attacked a human it would be killed. Regardless of whose fault it is.
Michael. 2313 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Oh totally, I can understand the act of them shooting the shark to help fend it off from the victim. I would have done the same I suppose. Still a horrible situation either way, got to sympathize with the family and those involved.
jeffbebe 1559 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Oh totally, I can understand the act of them shooting the shark to help fend it off from the victim. From the more recent reports it sounds like that was all they were trying to do. As far as I can tell from the accounts now the shark got away so it doesn't sound like it was fatally wounded. I guess now they will have to make an assessment as to whether the shark did more than just take a bite - only to discover it wasn't a seal - or whether it was a continued attack which might result in the shark being killed if they think it's a future threat to people. Either way not a great resolution.

polley 916 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 A shark is killed / shot at because it killed a person who was swimming in its habitat? There are people who kill babies / stick them in clothes dryers and dont even get similar punishment. The world is f**ked.

There are people who kill babies / stick them in clothes dryers and dont even get similar punishment. The world is f**ked. What would you have done if you were in the cop's position? Gun in your hand, watching a helpless guy get mauled by a great white..sit and watch the show? Edited February 27, 2013 by Navin
polley 916 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 From what I read yesterday the dude was already dead, and they werent even sure the shark had killed him or if he was dead before hand.
Tristan 338 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Typical media speculation before an event has panned out. The Herald is renowned for being inaccurate. I've had first hand experience of them printing the total opposite of what has happened.

hybrid 1043 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 My cousin is a prominant reporter for some major news outlets, he openly admits they play on words to sell the story. Its game to them and everyone bites Its easier to tell a lie then retract at a later date by difussion. You still 'sell' the story at that point in time. Apex 693 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 Is anyone else singing this in their head when ever this story is mentioned. Just me? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2yoVfDeLc8 Must be horrifying, have swam with sharks before and even a small one gives me the shits.
hybrid 1043 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 The good thing is its not like the sharks were actually at the beach area. The spot he was swimming around Maori Bay to Muriwai rocks has a big drop off shelf between the island and the Maori bay beach. I used to surf there when the swell was right you could get some great long waves as the swell popped out of the ocean in the middle of the bay. No doubt the sharks liked the steap drop off and rocky area.
yng_750 247 Report post Posted February 27, 2013 bit of a tragedy for his family but i hope they dont start a vendetta against sharks. Thats one kill in how many decades? they kill less people than dangerous dogs. If they were saving him i can understand shooting the shark but i doubt it was still going on when they fired.. Time for a shark attack is much less than time for someone to call 111 then get a cop down there with a gun in a boat and to the scene. Also since when did our cops have guns.... should have pepper sprayed the shark

jeffbebe 1559 Report post Posted February 28, 2013 Turns out the poor guy was a friend of a friend. Auckland's a small place. I surf there all the time. The point hybrid describes is also where countless fishermen, fishing off the rocks at the base of the gannet colony, chuck a lot chum and other stinky shark-attracting crap in the water. Having sat on my board over the shelf numerous times it can be a bit eery and not a place I'd choose to swim. Noticed the shark's got bigger in the news today... Grown a whole metre from 3-4m! He's also gone from attacking to savaging the poor bloke... It just gets worse... To sell papers.
Apex 693 Report post Posted February 28, 2013 I found out my uncles brothers flat mate once dated his cousin, its such a small world. I feel like I knew him myself so I have just requested a "candle in the wind" for him on my favorit radio station, the Breeze. Also since when did our cops have guns.... should have pepper sprayed the shark They have shot guns in the boot of the patrol cars that under lock, they are not something they can grab fast and shoot, its a back up thing. PS you must be careful not to over pepper Lemon Fish, can wreck the delicate flavors.
