E30 325i Rag-Top 2956 Report post Posted August 7, 2022 It designates that the person at the AA that entered the registration details mistook the “/2” for a 2-door coupe as a “Z”
E28E30 335 Report post Posted August 7, 2022 “2”. It’s a typo at registration time, ie M325i/2

Yeah thats the one, same owner/person who listed it on FB for $45k judging by the photos.
Sammo 2544 Report post Posted August 7, 2022 I see its already hit $20k as well. I presume legally it should be registered as the new chassis with the running gear and swapped over from the dead M325i (although sounds like it is/was a stroker which may or may not be from the original car) with cert for the modifications. I guess he actual chassis vin tag is long gone though. Bit of a funny one, still an awesome car but if the auction goes north of $30k or so owner may be expecting something a little more legit. 325iRod 135 Report post Posted August 8, 2022 It will be an interesting one to watch... I'm picking the Q & A section will get a hammering I notice in the engine bay pic the VIN on the windscreen seems to match the last 4 digits of the VIN advertised on Carjam. I think so, guy is being *reasonably* transparent about it and a dollar reserve is probably correct way to go with a car like this.
dirtydoogle 383 Report post Posted August 9, 2022 If that has indeed been plate and tagged, that is quite naughty.

I was interested in bidding but wanted to know more about the history, tracked down one of he previous owners (wasn't hard to do) and he confirmed it for me.
Sammo 2544 Report post Posted August 9, 2022 30 minutes ago, dirtydoogle said: If that has indeed been plate and tagged, that is quite naughty. Yeah, was for sale a year ago and got pulled. Screenshots in the September part of this thread. If the correct vin is hiding under the swapped one I guess it could be re-registered / certed / complied? Although assume the correct vin is long dead? Not sure how that all works TBH but looks like at least one bidder is pissed off.

Typically on an E30 you just cut that section out and weld a new one in, easy peasy. so finding the original numbers may be problematic Until then you have a car that is advertised as being very illegal 1

Go back to the plate from 1990 and run that through carjam instead of the personalised plates since, and you start to get a picture of the history... Dare I say it, you can picture the exact moment one chassis became another, right down to the day. 08/02/11 WoF fail for PA6782 at 292,862km but a pass the same day. 23/09/11 WoF pass for PA6782 at 251,009km... (oh sh*t we didn't swap the cluster) 10/09/14 WoF pass for PA6782 at 256,622 (wow that's weird). 09/06/15 WoF fail for PA6782 at 296,522, (hmmmm seems familiar). And then the classic E30 cluster odo gears fail from that point.

Personally I have no issue with that, we have a few re-shelled Escorts in the shop and I have done a few too. But the chassis numbers did not follow on to the new chassis
leonf 162 Report post Posted August 10, 2022 gee. Altogether too many unanswered questions with this one. I'm out. BUT the seller has done exactly the correct thing with his $1 reserve auction. Caveat emptor, as they say.

All the Lotus Cortina's and Ford Escorts that enjoyed successful race careers and probably 80% of the road cars here in NZ have all been rebodied, yet carry the original tags. Same with other brands too, Alfa Romeo, Austin Healey Jaguar and Porsche. Has it affected the values? Not one jot. Lets face it, none of the high km multi owner 325 MTech 1 or 2's will ever be collector cars, and this car falls into this category too, this is just the car for an enthusiast to acquire, and put his personal stamp on, as Sammo is doing with his. The seller is not trying to hide anything, and is making the sale as transparent as he can do, and kudos to him. $1 reserve, its on the market, put up or shut up 😉 1
Driftit 2078 Report post Posted August 11, 2022 https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/vehicle-registration/vin/ A person must not remove, erase, alter, deface, obscure, destroy or obliterate a VIN or chassis number. A vehicle inspector must not issue a WoF or CoF to a vehicle with a removed, erased, altered, defaced, obscured, destroyed or obliterated VIN or chassis number. However, if a vehicle can be appropriately identified Waka Kotahi will authorise the affixing or re-affixing of a new VIN. These vehicles should be referred to a VIN issuing Agent (AA, Drivesure, Nelson Vehicle Testing Centre Ltd, VINZ, and VTNZ). They will inspect the vehicle and seek approval from Waka Kotahi to issue or re-issue a VIN plate.

OIA request if you want some reading, I suggest starting at the "Ringing" heading https://fyi.org.nz/request/4016/response/13236/attach/5/THOMAS Daniel 16 4483 1 Chapters from the Police Manual Motor vehicle offences.pdf Except the high mileage Mt1 and Mt2 cars were actually put together at the factory, not some cul de sac or back-alley, and in the case of the Mt2 kit alone, there's probably close to 50 holes that are drilled into the car to fit the kit- I'd trust a West German robot from '89 over someone with an auger drill bit, and this is me giving them enough credit to suggest that they reused the dozens of brackets and plastic rivets required to fit the kit rather than a big gun of sikaflex.

Both the seller, and a previous owner posting in the imgur link above are quite upfront and open about this car having been reshelled. There no suggestion at all to alleged "Ringing" Neil whatsoever. There is probably 3 or 400 Falcon Gt's, Holden Monaro's various Lotus Porsches Austin Healey's and dare I suggest several BMW E30 and E36 M3's on the road today in NZ that have been reshelled as this car might have been. And like this 325 they are registered and carry current WOF's The car is for sale on the open market, warts and all. As Leon F says above, caveat emptor, buyer beware. Given the reshell may have taken place some considerable time ago, before the sellers ownership, lets let the guy get on with his auction.
