Don't get me wrong I'm all for the things I own to improve in value. However I also struggle to believe a vehicle I brought has skyrocketed in "value" in less than two years. It's not like in that time half them fell off the road or got written off so they got rarer. I believe it's to do with "hype" combined with what was low interest rates over that period and essentially "free interest" lended money. This is confirmed when in the last 3 months the car values are dropping 20% atleast from a year ago and appear to be sitting on trademe from the auctions I follow across all sorts of vehicles Edited December 13, 2022 by Southerner
Eagle 1662 Report post Posted December 13, 2022 I agree. Even in peak times its also hard truly what some vehicles realistically sell given its usually a private 1 on 1 deal. I think half these sellers just try it on for size and hope to get lucky.
Blackie 510 Report post Posted December 13, 2022 What has amazed me (and this is not specific to E30 sorry) is how one asking price can skew the entire market. What I mean is, once someone raises the bar (whether they sell or not {in most cases not}), others follow for no aparant reason. For example, the first E36 M3 priced over 40K (when most were previously around $25k) has been for sale for over two years now, but nearly every one offered to the market since has followed that price, even though the OG car (i.e. the ceiling smashing car) has never sold. Unfortantely, the same trend seems to be hitting some parts I need, to the point where I think I'll just get a Honda with the same HP for $5k. 😁
Southerner 146 Report post Posted December 13, 2022 The way I potentially see it. If it costs an extra few thousand when your potentially borrowing money at a lower interest rate, it doesn't make alot of difference at the time to ensure you get the purchase. As a percentage when your spending larger sums of money to add on the extra "tax" people are trending to do it. Overall bang for buck the e30/36 chassis is still pretty good compared to other desirable vehicles. I certainly won't be selling mine anytime soon, I'd have to finish it first 😂
Blackie 510 Report post Posted December 13, 2022 I guess I'm coming from a place of having never financed a vehicle. I just don't agree with their interest rates.
Contrails 317 Report post Posted December 13, 2022 Well I looked at financing an E46 M3 in Aus. It came under the older car umbrella so the 15% interest was justified according to the finance company. I offered monopoly money in return because it seems we were all at a comedy festival.

Even general consensus in that community is that prices are falling too

And the steal-me factor is through the roof 😬
Contrails 317 Report post Posted December 14, 2022 Did you guys see the black S13 with a RB26DETT conversion on tardme - went for $40k. Just a couple of months ago. That was a steal!

I miss my old rs13, had a ca18det putting out 200kw but like many cars in the early 2010s got stolen from the centee of town during the middle of day whilst I was at work 😕 swore I'd never go back but turbo noises.... 59 minutes ago, Contrails said: Did you guys see the black S13 with a RB26DETT conversion on tardme - went for $40k. I've seen a couple $1 reserve cars sell for about 10% less than what they were asking if that's any indication which way the market is headed short term

She often laughs when people tell her it's worth $30k. She paid $3k for it. And would never pay anywhere near $30k for one. Just like E30s, they were only good because they were cheap.
Contrails 317 Report post Posted December 17, 2022 These seats don't look original. Rose City cars again.
E30 325i Rag-Top 2956 Report post Posted December 18, 2022 Seats themselves are probably original but I have no idea as to what those headrests are from - Deffo not an M3, and they seem different to the old “fishnet” Recaros from old Escort/Capri, etc.

The rolling shell has been changed to a $1 no reserve auction, but has quickly shot up to $1600 thanks to some interesting bidding.

It'd need a lot of paint and interior for a $25k uplift, but I appreciate it's a 'try price' as much as anything else.
