This one has valuations of $15k, be interesting to see its final sell value

This is a sister car to mine, only ~50 units younger than mine on the VIN.  Looks tidy, and is an excellent project base, lightest-weight e30 shell (slicktop poverty spec).

Nah, just trying to find where the reserve is set, without “accidentally” ending up owning it!

Accidentally owning an e30 can be almost impossible nowadays

@E30 325i Rag-Top Not too sure if you’ve viewed the e30 you had a bidding party with but I viewed it yesterday. While one of them looks alright, not too sure if the other rust spot should be of concern (2nd photo). Wonder how much it’d cost to repair.

Engine also didn’t turn over first time around even though it was already warm (Ross said it hasn’t happened before even when left for a few weeks), and generally takes a bit more time to start - may just be the engine showing its age.

showing a lack of maintenance.  showing it's age is a result of following the standard kiwi maintenance plan (do f*ck-all, then pass it off as 'old').

Genuine question here as I’m new to this. What would you maintain to be able to prevent that? Replacing plugs? Injectors? Pump? Regulator? Would that mean that it’s “fixable”?

patina is a visual thing.  Ghost Chip was outlining an engine that's hard to start.  The danger of buzzwords is not knowing where to apply them!

can't answer without seeing the car in question, and should be noted I'm a moderately knowlegable enthusiast rather than a professional mechanic.  I don't mean to sound down on a car you've viewed, I don't even know which one you're referring to.

Basic regular maintenance on e30 includes oil, oil filter, air filter; brake fluid and coolant every two years; and general mechanical inspection and replacement of parts ahead of every WoF (brakes, suspension, steering) and that good old lubrication of hinges, inspection and replacement of belts, plugs etc at the correct intervals.  Many cars don't even get this much care.  Your run-of-the-mill Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Hyundai etc can withstand more abuse with less maintenance.  An e30 - now in classic status - needs more care.  Hope that helps.

For reference, it was this car I was talking about. And don’t worry, I didn’t even take it that way. https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-3081744318.htm

It both does and doesn’t help. I guess where I’m getting at is if it’s the engine not being maintained rather than the engine ageing so to speak, then it should be somewhat reversible by replacing the parts that have worn out? Or is it that if the engine takes noticeable time to turn over, it’s beyond repair / salvaging?

it could be ignition system, starter motor, sensors, fuel... best thing you can do is get a really good PPI done by a specialist that really knows the e30.  There's no reason an M20B25 shouldn't be able to run and drive just like when new, especially if it's had a quality rebuild.  No sense loading the parts cannon, get expert diagnosis, get it sussed, and then reward the same business with your loyalty for maintenance to take care of the car and keep it running.  HTH.

Hi Harm, does that mean the smiley headlights were fitted at some later date?

Your knowledge is encyclopaedic:)

Yep smileys fitted at a later date, it's a very simple mod and a huge improvement over the prefacelift sealed beams.

@Ghost Chip @Olaf the motor in question is now a 2.8 is it not? The first question that should be asked is what management its running.

Yup, stroked engine. Does that mean the ECU?

Probably just a faulty anti drain valve in the pump.

Depending on what the reserve is it’s almost worth buying to convert back to a road car, given it is a genuine NZ New Tech 1.

Would be a bit of work cutting out the cage and re-fitting the interior, but potentially worthwhile.

Certain upholstery is harder to get and therefore more expensive - a decent set of sports seats in houndstooth (which is what I think the door cards are) would be a few bucks. Most of the stuff would be common across all the E30 so plenty around.
