Kobra 180 Report post Posted April 27, 2021 Nice work. I'm guessing those 17x9 style 32's were going to be too tight for the rear guards?

They'll fit, just haven't had them on as these were closer at the time. Have some other 17x9s for the rear ill also be using that should sit even better, just waiting on some tyres
Olaf 3341 Report post Posted April 27, 2021 (edited) looking great Cam @Southerner! Particularly those Style 15s, they'll be awesome. Question about steering setup. Do you have the part number for the Barina linkage please? Also what did you do with the pipes? Loving this project! Thanks @Olaf Don't have the part number sorry but its the one everyone uses, is collapsible/slides and length alters. One thing to note with this and others if watching is about the bearing swap to e30. The bearings are pushed out and installed with the bearing strakes removed, doing this therefore renders nothing holding the bearing captive. The bearing that gets reused is also not exactly the right size, talking microns but it's still not the right size. One option is to put a weld tack on it, however this is not really acceptable for a couple reasons, 1. Your welding a steering component, this will fail cert and puts heat into the steel, in terms of metal strength this also potentially weakens it. It's also heating the bearing which holds grease and any deformation impears on the bearing 2. The knuckle is alloy, bearing steel. You can't weld dissimilar materials, the alloy won't stick to the steel I therefore went to a driveshaft specialist who machined out the housing by a hair, put in a new bearing that suits the uni joint, and put in a lock screw. Please see picture. I think it cost me less than $150 but for the sake of a steering component and passing cert I think its worthwhile. Power steering pipes I assume your talking about? Haven't got that far, is on the list! Is probably a job ill save for when its on a hoist and I don't have to grovel on the ground up and down tweaking! But the rear end is also all bolted together. LSD mounted, 325 axles, suspension. Inner guards have also been undersealed again
Olaf 3341 Report post Posted April 28, 2021 (edited) wow! 1000 thank yous, Cam. That's brilliant. Re the steering, plenty mention 'bending the pipes'. I'm not so keen on that. I've talked to Dan in the UK (the guy mentioned on e30 Zone, who makes beautifully turned-out pipes and hose kits to suit e46 racks in e30), £205 plus freight. "BM Conversions UK Ltd". Pricey but proper? Or is it a case of getting in Pirtek or Hydraulink or similar, and having something made up? Edited April 28, 2021 by Olaf

No worries, I haven't even looked at it for a second to be honest so don't know exactly what tweaking is required, i have e36 lines off the motor and e30 ones. Ill let you know when I get a chance the closet ones, i wont just be bending them, I try to get things as close to factory/proper as they can be. But yea i would of thought local powersteering guys could come up with something. Possibly with me having a e36 motor and a newer rack it might not be as bad as a standard e30 to new rack?
WYZEUP 283 Report post Posted April 29, 2021 The power steering lines are pretty straight forward. I made mine for the v8. only one is a high pressure hose - cut the factory fittings from the hoses and measured the length/path i wanted it to take and had hydraulink crimp the ends onto the correct hose for about $80. The other 2 are lower pressure lines so some braid line with hose clamps works well Nice work on the build - a little jealous of the style 32's
Kobra 180 Report post Posted April 30, 2021 Another option for the P/S hoses - make a custom high pressure hose with AN fittings and appropriate hose. For the low pressure side, a standard E36 hose worked nicely with a little tweaking, and a small support bracket to secure it. I did this to fit an E46 purple tag rack to my E30, and it worked quite nicely. I also did a different E30 by just carefully bending the original E30 high side hose. It didn't look great, but it worked perfectly.
Southerner 146 Report post Posted July 29, 2021 Crickey, page 2, better start pulling finger and get some action happening! Powersteering lines are on and hooked up, thanks to @Cammsport sending me a video showing the routes it was pretty simple, slight tweak. Managed to also have some success last night. Again thanks to @euroriffic this time, few checks here and there and it fired up realitively easy! Excuse the wiring, wanted to check it would work before I slim the loom much further. Snapchat-884953232.mp4 Got my driveshaft back, new unis and balanced. Need to sort out radiator set up. Carpet be coming out to sort driveshaft hoops and run battery cable.

Southerner 146 Report post Posted September 6, 2021 More parts keep on arriving for this but nothing too exciting. Have been chipping away and currently part way through wiring to mount the ecu up behind the glove box. Lockdown inspired I wired in a E36 business cd headunit to replace the Sony exploder, in the cd input I wired in a Bluetooth receiver so can Bluetooth a phone to it for spotify etc. Will upload a photo once the headunit is fully mounted. Looks factory though! Am currently waiting on a fcp order which is stuck in Aussie which contains nuts and bolts literally to do some final bolt ups Here's a couple photos when I rolled out on a sunny day. Tyres on the style 32s need to be dropped a profile but this got it rolling as such. Also a photo of when I first got it was picking up deck materials 6

Southerner 146 Report post Posted April 21, 2022 Bit of late night last night with @euroriffic. Tidied up the wiring alot, none really visable which i wanted to achieve. Will work on headers and driveshaft hoops next to then waterblast/scrub the engine bay to then install the radiator. Injector/fuel rail cover will get slightly adjusted to sit better.
Southerner 146 Report post Posted August 14, 2022 Back into this thing and is progressing. Working through driveshaft hoops at the moment. Along with exhaust, will put some photos up next day or so in regards to that. Have an adrenalin r twin 2" back box, and a pair of 2" torque chambers, will be a full twin 2" system stainless. Here's a couple of photos of a pair of shoes I tried on today Bit over tired at the moment, was more to try on fitment wise if I manage to stumble across a set for myself.
