Will car thefts actually drastically reduce or will hijackings become far more commonplace? Time to enable that 'lock once moving' feature

jon dee 500 Report post Posted June 10, 2021 I have no idea how this particular car got stolen, but if it was stolen from a KFC carpark, then the chances are that it was an opportunistic theft. A few years back I saw a couple of security camera videos that showed guys hanging around in a gas station, waiting for people to leave their car unattended when they went inside to pay for gas. Then, you would see one guy sidle up to the car and check to see if the keys were in the ignition, and if they were, into the car and gone. From that time on I made sure to always take the keys out and put them in my pocket when filling my car and going inside to pay. Cheers...
qube 3570 Report post Posted June 11, 2021 ^ which is why I really like having the comfort access feature on the newer bmw's cuz the key stays forever in my pocket
Simca 49 Report post Posted June 11, 2021 I would lock my car at gas stations if I could but the central locking locks my fuel door too.

Yes it has, which is why the most stolen cars are the older ones without all the modern anti-theft devices. Most are opportunistic or kids. Lots of methods out there, some real urban myths as well, and if someone knows what they are doing then they will take it. All you can do is minimise the risk and make it harder to take than another one. i see the listing has been pulled from TradeMe... because of the stolen bit or..? Open flap, lock, fill gas, close flap, pay, come back, unlock, flap falls shut. Edited June 11, 2021 by C-130 Hercules 4

Neal 539 Report post Posted June 12, 2021 There is an ODB update that improves security on most except last of the e9x platforms. That and turning off comfort entry was a fix for a $30 tool that’s about. Update was circa 2012.Also can be applied to e70 platform. See dealer or specialist for a software update and my advice would be to get it done. The reason for this one being stolen however is on FB

leichtbau 525 Report post Posted June 13, 2021 Sounds like obtaining by deception, not theft. Some great wording in the legislation too: Quote In this section, deception means — (c) a fraudulent device, trick, or stratagem used with intent to deceive any person

Olaf 3308 Report post Posted June 13, 2021 this thread is meta discussion from Facebook, and a spammage posting of a frankly dodgy "theft". The facts are not available.
