Sammo 2614 Report post Posted March 28, 2023 Got the car back today after a mechanical birthday and have to say - I'm falling in love with it all over again. Foruntately for me, the gearbox was fine and it just needed a new clutch so got a few other things sorted as well and it is completely transformed: New LUK clutch kit and flywheel machined (the old generic heavy duty clutch lining was wrecked) Super stiff (I had assumed it was an E30 thing) accelerator cable cleaned and adjusted - will replace later in the year but 100x better already Valve cover leak and valves that were way out of spec adjusted Idle valve and throttle clean and some minor vacuum leaks sorted Everything cleaned off so any potential other leaks can be easily identified I never realised I was driving around a rough E30 but its another car now - nice light and responsive clutch and accelerator pedals, along with a far quieter idle and stronger, much smoother pull through the gears. Not sure,I suspect it started when I had a user error breakdown last year and had to abuse it a little to get back to civilisation. And would have got worse from there once it was half fixed and running again. There was oil there too apparently so might have accelerated damage? Sammo 2614 Report post Posted April 30, 2023 (edited) A few little maintenence items done as I'm getting car winter ready - new front rotors / new wiper jet nozzles / refurbished injectors / balance and alignment. Car was on wedding duty in Papamoa this weekend - a good 7 hours driving in it with largely inclement weather and she was rock solid and surprisngly comfortable. Sammo 2614 Report post Posted June 22, 2023 Been a little while since I updated. Replaced injectors and my coolant temp sensor (one that tells the ECU roughly how cold it is) which seems to have really improved the cars temperament when cold (would always idle fine but would often be a little hesitant under load like in old cold carbureted car). Also replaced my blower motor resistor but think I’ll need to replace blower motor too as it was stiff as - lubed it up but imagine it will seize itself again before too long. Running extremely well for the BMW club run this Sunday - let’s hope it does not need a tow this time around! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Sammo 2614 Report post Posted August 28, 2023 (edited) Car has been going great guns through the miserable winter months but with the nice change in weather got out on a few rural backroads with @Cement and @elias on Saturday - Dave and I having to navigate a pretty decent swathe of semi' precarious gravel roads, so here is a rare dirty picture of the old girl! Next project is a cluster refurb and tart up and then a refurbished steering rack before the next WOF. From there will just be dirivng the wheels off it and saving up for some rust repair and full respray next winter. Sammo 2614 Report post Posted October 22, 2023 (edited) Finally fixed my odometer gears and gave the cluster a mini tart up while I was at it with a polished cover and an Mtechnic tachometer gauge face. Kept it subtle and resisted the urge to paint the needles red 😂 Tried matte black cluster rings (2nd pic) but decided against them. Also had some new SI board batteries and capacitors but it all looked good and my soldering isn’t great so decided to not mess with it unnecessarily.
