    I apologise for the lack of updates over the last few days, I've been busy working on the car. It is now all physically back together, drivetrain, exhaust, brakes, engine etc all done. All coolant hoses etc are hooked up. I have also relocated the battery to the trunk using e36 parts. Tonight and over the weekend I will be doing the last few small jobs and doing the wiring. The plan to have it driving by the end of the weekend looks very realistic. More to come soon.

    Loosen the belt tensioner(s) and spin the pulleys by hand to see if/which one is making the noise.

    come on Francois, get the details onto your ad. ET, CB, perhaps the part numbers? With this much interest, they'd probably be sold by now... if it weren't for the guessing game.

    They also came on e38. If they are the 8" wide versions like mine they will most likely be 23 offset.

    http://www.bmwstylewheels.com/bmw/5 the only 16" of style 5's are the ones off a e30 m3 (which these are probably not) or the 16x7.5 off an e28 m5 (probably not either) or the e34 5er (i think probably this) so its most likely going to be ET20 offset. which is pretty good and fits a whole range of bmws

    At $50 new, a piece of Marley pipe would be more effective, just paint it black, old story ,get what you pay for, I suppose

    Hi there, Recently purchased a E38 728i and have known there was a lingering problem of some oil leaking around the lower left hand side of the engine. It often results in burnt oil smoke coming from the bonnet while idling in traffic. It has also increased gas consumption and a loss of low end torque. Have googled the symptoms but want to hear some thoughts from you guys. The car has done 186xxx and is good mechanical condition otherewise. Thanks heaps

    Haven't updated this for a whiile! Did an engine oil and filter service last month and also changed the thermostat (for like the 4th time in 2 years) due to it leaking constantly. I thought that had concluded my entire cooling system but looks like I might have another coolant leak now... and maybe a belt problem. First thing I noticed was something under the bonnet started squealing very loud when driving occasionally - figured something is up with the belts (though all my belts have been replaced a year ago) and/or pulleys -> my idler pulley did seem to have a very slight wobble last time i checked. Not sure where exactly the squeal is coming from since it goes away every time im about to check under the bonnet.. but perhaps it's related to that idler pulley. What I did notice was small amount of coolant spray on my air intake box , sprayed from coolant falling on the belt I'd say, which is exactly what happened when my old thermostat was leaking. Better not be the new thermostat leaking too - I'm sick of changing thermostats . Perhaps the squeal is being caused by coolant falling on the belt. Will need to take it in to have it checked out. There seems to be quite a lot of info regarding squealing sounds in e39s online, all pointing to all sorts of different things but mainly around the belt being bad. Drive and feel still feels normal. The squealing sound is just bloody annoying when it appears sometimes. I had my waterpump replaced just few months ago as well, and I checked it for leaks when changing the thermostat and it seemed all good. All the main hoses are new as well, along with radiator etc. I guess coolant leaks just love me.

    This is what I would do; First do a dash lights test. Key to pos 2 - press left knob on gauge cluster and hold until TEST displayed - press left knob and hold until 2.0 displayed - click again. You can't hurt anything. If the airbag lamp doesn't go then it has been disconnected probably due to a faulty seat sensor making the lamp stay on. Fix sensor and reconnect to get it working again.

    Wow. Not a good start to the day... Tried dodging a van inside a parking lot and skimmed a pole. Guess I need a new left rear door trim, and a repaint. :-( If anyone knows where I might be able to get just a single trim let me know!
