ENGINE BAY IS PAINTED its not 100% show stopping paint job, but i am happy with the outcome esp for a garage can paint job Also picked up some new wheels over the weekend to replace the e38 wheels, now to adjust everything so they fit nicely

Hi Pete, Thanks for the feedback; I'm just back from holidays, so apologies for the delayed reply. I did indeed buy an extended warranty for the car. I'm happy with the condition it's in, but I know from experience (Before the Scirocco I had a 2004 730i) how expensive some repairs can be. Now I've used the car a wee bit more, I've come to terms with some of the contrasts between a lightweight, turbocharged, FWD car, and the powerful, heavier RWD beast that the 550i is! And I'm very impressed with the new one!

Progress... Seats, carpet etc all stripped. Mocking up seat rails: Dash out, seat base/rails all ready for paint. Test fitting front laterals here. Cage is a standard 6 point kit from Racecraft in Christchurch. To say the fitment is great is an understatement. Measuring up main hoop for trimming etc. And pic of the front laterals and main hoop notched and ready to be dropped and welded. Since taking these pics the windscreen bar's been welded in as well so will hopefully be mostly done by the end of the week. Still have to install floor plates and lugs for harnesses and then it'll be back in my garage for the long awaited heart transplant. Good times.

well said, Charlie. Toby, false economy saving $$ on your short block, esp given your intended application. I really liked Charlie's words about having to take it out again in 6 months (or less)...

+1 to this. even if your doing all the work yourself, price your labor, the time/effort/expense of doing a rebuild at this point is about the same as taking it out in 6 months if one of the above things fails (and then you'll have to spend the money anyway or roll the dice on another engine), it may have been running mint N/A, but as soon as you strap a hair drier to it what was an acceptable amount of bearing play for an N/A may cause some dramas. it will give you peace of mind and add resale value if you ever move it on. I once chose not to do this, and the excitement of getting it on the road 3 days earlier and $500 cheaper dissolved in short order... At the very least visually inspect and check all the tolerances anyway, maybe they are within spec...

definitely. if there's water damage on the bores, your rings will also be damaged. Hell, if you've got it apart, rings and bearings, surely? And ensure the bottom end (mains, crankshaft end float), are all within spec. False economy to put it back together with anything less than it needs, IMHO.

You should consider my 325i E91. Its certainly in the right price category

Welcome to another E60 owner! As others have said weight+ power + RWD + rain = care required Never had run flats on my 545i so haven't experienced the difference. Just a question - do you pick up a MBI/wty on your vehicle? From my experience very worthwhile (admittedly with older vehicle).
