With the only E46 M3 Touring ever made by BMW as inspiration I have set out to make our own version. Starting with a 2004 M Spec 318T as a base and a 2002 damaged M3 as a donor a start was made today when the Touring arrived. We spent a couple of hours pulling bent parts of the car and loading am M3 bonnet on to start the transformation process. This build thread https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.326215047461492.73510.114076275342038&type=1 gives good insight into the build process. A big plus will be the MK60 DSC as part of the 318`s spec sheet and having all running gear plus a good rear cut to use. Here are some pics starting with the E46 M3T stored in the Basement at BMW. jy66242.pdf

I ended up just getting another factory DME with matching EWS box and chip, so for now, I'll just use that. Project update! (Warning! lots of pictures) Admittedly, my progress has been pretty slow over the past few months. But I have been collecting parts as funds allow. I drained a lovely strawberry milkshake like oil mix from the transmission. Luckily, the gears inside don't show any signs of corrosion. I then started the tearing down the engine to inspect the damage. The camshafts looking good... Pulled the camshafts and stored them away safely wrapped in newspaper. This shot shows just how much silt was left on the engine. At this point I started debating whether or not I should pull the head. In the end, I was convinced it needed to happen. Head off! Inspecting the cylinders and piston crowns. Plenty of crud build-up. At this point, I'm very glad I pulled the head. The valves have a bit of surface rust and crud on them, but I think they'll clean up nicely. I started cleaning up the bores and tops of the pistons with some old gasoline. I forgot to take pictures of the head when I was cleaning it, but came out equally as well as the short-block. I then proceeded to flip the engine over, and pull the oil pan off. Still a great deal of milky oil left coating the bottom-end. I spent the next few weekends cleaning all of the nooks and crannies of the engine with old gas and a toothbrush. This took far more hours than I'm willing to admit, but the end result was certainly worth it. The engine then sat like this for a couple of months...

I think if one was to purchase such a machine, now is the time. Although the mileage is rather high on a few of these recent examples, just being the E39 M5 makes you want one regardless haha.

Wondering if the E39 M5 has hit the bottom of their 'market value'. The last two $1 reserve M5's went for @ $17.5k and $18.5k. One other E39 M5 on TM at the mo for $22.5k. I would say this one's worth a gamble - damn if only I was in the market!

Looks good man, going to put my spare m52b28 into my little brothers 2 door e30 coupe at some point too! As far as DME's go, get another m52b28 DME, along with the key chip and ews unit under the dash. There are tutorials online as to how to wire the ews system into e30's either that or buy yourself a flashed m52b28 dme with ews delete. The red 413 DME comes without EWS and is for M50b25 engines or if you did a full loom swap onto your b28 as my old b28 is. Any questions feel free to hit me up!

Gear box ratios that were chosen to work with the other gears, not chosen to pass an emission test or obtain a fuel ecomomy figure.

Fabulous! I was wondering earlier if anything came of this... Glad it worked out. I trust you were the epitome of care and restraint and had your special wooden block under the accelerator pedal?

Driving the 'monster in stealth' after time spent driving the HSV or Monaro. Then you realise what the Germans have got sooo right for sooo long... and the 500hp V10 grow X2l!! haha

Don't get a tiltadoor unless it's sectional.Made that mistake with my first one. It occasionally would hit a car or guest car if parked to close. Not good with kids either. also limits how much height you have to play with an engine when using an engine hoist if door open.

Time to update the concept touring with a major repower. Out with the S54 and in goes a S65 with M-DCT. Time for Quest fabrication to do their magic, especially with headers to be fabricated from scratch. First photos show the S65 and DCT in place. So far we have custom made engine mounts, gearbox mount and steering shaft.
