Hi Team So i'm a new member myself and thought i'd kill two birds with one stone and introduce myself. Names Richard and i'm here to share my journey with my dream car build. Yes you read it right i am going to drop a v12 into the best shape ( my opinion ) bmw ever made. So i had purchased the v12 motor and auto box off trade me late 2015. Have also managed to find a rare 6 speed box that come out of the 850csi bmw that i had to get shipped from Britain. Treated myself to a nice New Zealand new 2000 manual 232i for my birthday earlier this year. Very nice looking with the factory 18inch mags and msport half leather seats and factory spoiler kit too. So here the build begins. over the 3day weekend i disassembled the engine to start cleaning parts for the rebuild. Had already took the heads off and sent to an engineering place to price up getting some custom cams and an ITB set up made. I also have a full new gasket set, head bolts and piston rings that will be replacing all the old stuff, a custom dry sump set up from the states as the oil pan had to be modified to fit the factory cross member. Just be aware these units are much bigger than the common little units. Haven't yet started an E39 but cannot imagine a problem with it. On Friday i used it to start a Ford 4000 tractor with a virtually dead battery - started no problem. it actually amazed me.

Also the Hamilton expressway by the new Cambridge extension is one lane, and at night when we get back to Auckland the F#*@en motorway is closed every night and we have to detour

i always just leave the batteries connected for a while before i try to start.The batteries will try to equalise so you will ge t some charge into the recipient.Takes a few minutes tho

I had been using for a couple of years a small 400 amp unit (same as the Power All). While it has had limitations, it has been a great unit & probably started about 400 vehicles. It was though past it's best & I was more often getting the battery & leads out. I recently obtained a new unit (as in pic), it is way superior with about 4 times the output - this i have confirmed. Be aware though, any jump pack sitting unused in the glovebox for 12 months will prove useless in trying to start the vehicle. I often use mine several times a day. Jumper leads - discount the entry level ones, you will probably need to spend $60 -80 for a reasonable set

Possibly the wrong thread by I did Auckland -> Hamilton on Friday. Left Ellerslie at 14:17 and arrived in Hamilton CBD at 15:47, torrential rain, roadworks, single lanes and all. I was pleasantly surprised considering I'd just read the roadworks post above about 2 hours before leaving. Never exceeded the posted limit (including 70) by more than 10km/h. Although I will say that if people aren't confident driving in the wet then pulling over is a better option than driving 60km/h in a 100km/h zone. You're not on slicks buddy.

Yup - you can just remove the swirl flaps, but there are several suppliers of blanking plug kits that finish the job. The 'box was running pretty close to it's max torque spec when it left the factory in a 330d. Proper maintenance - as opposed to that (not) specified by BMW will prolong the life but any tuning will often see it get tired in a hurry. Same is true of the 'box in the 320d, although it's not quite so bad. Ecotune do some serious tuning kits for the 320d, but their software limits torque to protect the gearbox.

I was part of that industry for quite a while so I fail to see why you are taking offence. As to just charging labour to fit supplied parts what else would you charge? A few ancillaries like some grease, zip ties etc might be appropriate but if there is no parts costs and its pure fitting then what else? As it stands you have made it quite clear you are not keen on fitting parts other people supply, So I have suggested the OP go somewhere where they dont have this policy. You dont want to do it so that's fine someone else will and as it's not really a BMW specialist job most performance shops will likely have no issues. Oh and the reason I get other people to work on my car sometimes is simple, opportunity cost, what I pay them to do the job is a lot less than I get remunerated to do mine.
