2 pointsSo the engine is running a little rough after sitting for a while. High idle when cold, and it seemed to have a bit of a miss. I hooked up my laptop with INPA to figure out what was going on, and found several fault codes. The cam position sensor seems to have gone bad. And the VANOS appears to be jammed. Possible O2 sensor fault code, but didn't come back after running for a while. The cam sensor is not a biggie. I picked up a new one and installed it earlier today. Code was immediate gone, and so was the high idle. The car is still idling rough a seems like it's down a cylinder or 2 at times. My theory is that this could be caused by the vanos being stuck in the advanced position. When I reassembled the intake vanos timing chain sprocket, the timing did not want to move very easily. I wasn't sure if it was going to be an issue, so I left it. I probably should have sorted out the issue at the time, because now It's clearly an issue. Anyway, I've ordered some replacement parts, so hopefully I can get it sorted in a couple weeks. Meanwhile, I may have to do some work on the exhaust to gain more clearance to the lower steering joint. I'll also need to roll the wheel arches, and adjust the suspension to drop it down more.

2 pointsThough not as rare as manual 840i's, this is a relatively unique car - BMW only made 98 examples with a 6-speed manual versus around 1,000 in automatic for the 850i (in rhd). Try getting another manual E31 in NZ -especially a 850i - slim pickings. Mauritius blue - nice colour too. Low miles for a car nigh on 30 years old. Shame it doesn't have the M-tech body kit, or have 17" style 5's or throwing stars like the latter E31's. Personally, I see E31 prices all over the place- quite hard to price. The 850i's with inter-galactic travel that have been poorly maintained - are deemed boat anchors by many, and can be a hard to sell at $10k. A nice one on the other hand with solid provenance, history, and reasonable mileage could be a $15-30k car. If this car has the history and has been maintained - I see it from $20-$25k. Once again, on a global perspective, nice 8's are on the rise - not just the 840ci sports and fabled 850csi's. As usual, the NZ market is conservative, and does not necessarily follow international trends. However, this is a rare car and deserves to go to a good home.

1 pointWithdrawn Just like the BMW series plates, but boxier and safer. This was the cheapest euro style plate on trademe when I was looking. To be honest, the idea of running a volvo plate on a bmw sort of tickled me too. $300

1 pointLooks like a nice original car. If it were me, I'd try and acquire a head unit that they used in later E31's and E36's - really looks good with that console.

1 pointit's amazing to think that this could have shared a showroom floor with e30's eh?! ?

1 pointI used a C43 in my Mtech. It is in my opinion the best original looking head unit for an E30. Looks as if it came factory but a cheap Bluetooth unit plugs in and having RDS is just pure class. There is a small amount of fiddling to get one to fit but its worth it. The Bluetooth works surprisingly well in mine. CD43's have better sound quality apparently but then you get the CD slot which just looks wrong. Loving this 316i too. I've got two myself and my dream is to M42 one as the ultimate little run around.

1 pointI have a E39 Touring that I brought for some parts for my 540iT - that now needs to be moved on... Its a Japanese spec 528i, with cloth interior, and towbar (but no towing wiring) The interior is probably in okay condition - but would need a heap of cleaning - as the car had a leaky sunroof and was stored outside with the windows closed - so a bit mouldy. The engine is a non runner - it will start and fire, but wont rev and higher than idle - transmission seems to work It has a good set of Bridgestone Potenzas (very little use) - with a couple of usable spare tyres as well If you are Wellington based - or happy to travel - then I'm happy for people to come grab bits off the car - or take the whole car. I'm not interested in removing and shipping parts - if you want something - you will need to come and remove it yourself. If you want the wheels and tyres - they will need to be swapped with old E39 rims and tyres - so that the shell remains a roller I'm looking to get rid of the car i the next couple of weeks - as its a PITA where its sitting on the driveway. PM or TXT me on 0272010807 if you want to come around and grab bits

1 pointA multi meter will only give you voltage. It will not do a load test which is what you need to do after charging it for at least 24hrs. If its over three years old...replace it
-
1 pointNo. But will tell you if the entire road is a bus lane at certain times of the day. Rich you should be on that bus. It only costs $7 each way and goes nowhere near where you would want to be. When it arrives is also a complete surprise.

1 pointThat brings us to this weekend. A few things left before I can put it back on the ground. The front control arm bushes were upgraded. Had some trouble getting one of the front bushings off the control arm. Lollipops cleaned up, painted, with Powerflex bushes pressed in. They were quickly bolted back into the car along with the exhaust. The brakes were bled and the wheels went on. Finally ready to drop back on the ground. Looking good! I am very happy with how well the 16x7 et20 style 5s fit. The front and rear will need to be lowered some more. The front is still on the 6kg spring that comes with the BC Gold kit. The rear sits a bit higher now as I got higher rate, 8kg spring to help support the extra weight of the touring rear. The fenders will all need rolling, but that's a job for another weekend. Stoked!

1 pointMoved into position, ready to install into the car. A new day, time to install the rear-end. And just like that... Driveshaft, brakes lines, and handbrake cables were all reinstalled. Testing fitting a wheel. Exhaust heat shields in.
-
1 pointCleaning up the brakes. Applied a rubberized underbody coating to the trailing arms and subframe. The can said apply a thick coat, I possibly went too thick... New brake lines install in the front. Getting ready to reassemble. I didn't get many shots of reassembly.

1 pointUsing the standard Facebook "miles to k's conversion" most use, that's something like 689,342k's, so very high mileage...... I'll give her $100 (again Facebook conversion rates ??). Na seriously think I just about made a mess in my pants at those pics, looks like it's in great, honest condition for it's age and should fetch a worthy price, I couldn't even ballpark what it should go for but hope she gets reasonable offers for it.
