Inspired by @CSET and the Facebook series “playing with cars” I decided to use some spare bits to get the convertible back together so I can at least take it for a WoF while I wait for the parts to come back from panel and paint. So I now have a “rat rod” style Vert, fingers crossed for the WoF!

Looking to buy a e91 m sport car, preferably Titan silver, with sunroof, black headlining, leather electric seats, and 18inch m sport wheels. not looking for a working car, will be used for parts, something like a blown up 320i, or car with damaged gearbox, no engine etc. must be m sport, bonus if it’s got a cool coloured leather interior such as brown or red.

I’m hoping when I get around to doing the glow plugs it goes as smoothly as yours! Just did a quick trip last night to oamaru and back, 240ish kms, and now I know not to shift into 5th under load it never had an issue. Filled up and left with 850km of range, sat on 999 most the way until hitting the hills back into dunedin, and ended up with 970kms left. Was so much better this trip with no squeaky interior and having cool AC. Was going to take the m3, but the old soot box is just so much better to travel in!

Maybe have a read about N54 engines?

Vendors on Aliexpress could cut the keys for $~20 based on photos when i did mine a couple of years ago. The Aliexpress E36 remote buttons are hit and miss if they work properly with a battery in them in my experience, but not really an issue if you just want a backup key. Once you put in the initial cost\effort and have the EWS data on file, you can write a new key yourself in less than 2 mins should if you ever need another one.

Remote keys for e36 are NLA. I got a non remote key for a compact last year. Cant remember how much but wasn't crazy

Dealer should be able to sort it with just the VIN code. Be prepared to fork out around $500. I personally couldn't justify that so found a DIY solution. AK90+ module off Aliexpress - $30 Blank key off Aliexpress - $10 Get a locksmith to cut the key - $30-50 Install the software that came with the AK90+, unbolt the EWS module from the car, an hour max fiddling around and you've coded yourself a new key for under 1/5th of the price. 1998 E36 should be EWS 2 so will be compatible. Plenty of easy to follow guides out there. Turned out a much easier process than I had feared. Just have a go.

Yet to crawl under the car since being back but did address the most in-you-face visual defect still present - the beat up cluster face. Someone must have whacked it in a fit of rage since the plastic cover was cracked all the way along the bottom and had one crack running almost the full height of it. Stumbled upon a used cluster being sold on Marketplace so grabbed it and swapped over the front panel onto the existing one. The mileage was looking quite dim and not fully illuminating - one of the small bulbs behind the LCD turned out to be blown, which I also swapped over. All lighting up evenly now, no dead pixels (knock on wood) and looking nice and crisp. Wifey's that wee bit happier.

Piecing together my M42/44 hybrid. Ended up ponying up for some valve springs so I can rev the nuts off it. Schrick cams are backordered and the exchange rate sucks so that will be phase two. The flywheel weighs nothing and everything's been balanced so it should be pretty zingy.

Weight is comparable to N52B30. Ali block unlike earlier M57`s.
