  1. Peter Brock Endorsed an "Atom Polariser" and wanted it to be a standard item on his "HDT Senator". GMH refused to back any new car warranty with these items fitted [ hence the Brock-GMH split ] The Fuelstar flows thru a pile of "tin" [ or pewter ] pelets . C'mon you guys, do you all honestly believe in all this Bullshit! This forum is for car people who generally have a bit of car knowledge [ I could understand a fuelstar being used on a Lada or a Hino Contessa ]
  2. When I said a BMW is not strangled. Look at the power / litre of these things on pump gas thru mufflers, & polution controls [ they get the same performance as an old race engine ] They get relatively high V/E right up to the rev limit [ turn it faster and the BMEP and TQ will drop ] So within the limits of the rev range they are not strangled No one individual modification will get any major gains [ except NOs or a turbo ] eg: a K&N pod filter vs stock [ one is quiet and designed for longevity , the other may get 2 more hp??? ] Combine a few carefully matched mods and you will see results [ you have to get more air thru the engine ] Start with a Pod filter, then Intake Manifold , Cams , Headers , full free flowing exhaust, lighten the flywheel [you'll need a better clutch ] and lower diff gears , and a chip that raises the limiter You have then built a car that I wouldn't want to use as a daily driver [ but would be very responsive, especially with the cams & diff gears ] Equal length headers produce a negligable amount more than unequal length as soon as a muffler is used [ But I'd go for the M3's because they fit, and they don't rot out like aftermarket headers ] and they'd be cheaper Incidentally, on Canam Chevys they used unequal length intake stacks to widen the TQ range , and make the engine more tractable,
  3. On a 7.4 litre V8, a set of open headers is worth 45-60hp over a stock exhaust [ I've seen the Ads claiming this] But who uses open headers on the street ???? I've also seen tests where a Muffler manufacturer's products gained HP over open headers [ dyno proven on the same engine ] "they had a special long exhaust duration cam in the engine" The Engine is an Air Pump, free flowing intakes and exhausts help raise the volumetric eficiency especially at higher RPM [ if you rev it more, it'll make more top end power ] If the engine is strangled [ which your BMW isn't ] increasing airflow in / out will make a lot more power "Keith Duckworth" of Cosworth fame once said " hp is the size of the bang, times the number of bangs per minute " so Increase the "bang" or Rev it harder Nitrous is the best value for the occasional squirt , it's easily removed when you sell the car [ a $2500 set of Schrick cams , and a $2000 exhaust system will buy a hell of a lot of nitrous ] The car also remains user friendly , when its used in traffic jams etc
  4. If I remember correctly, The AA did a controlled test a few years ago, and there was no inprovement. But I know of a few racers that have done better lap-times with one [ uncontrolled test ] , which is the placebo effect needed to justify the stupidity of buying one in the first place [ they were probably driving better, or conditions changed ] You can only get 'so much' energy from a BTU, pumping fuel thru lead or zinc pellets [ or an ion polariser ??? ] does not increase the BTU content [ British thermal unit ] If this "magic wand" altered the molecular structure to get significant gains, I am sure Oil Companies with their Petrochemistry skills could do the same to get the competitive edge [ conspiracy theorists may argue this ] Hey, Buy a " Turbonater" , at least it contains one moving part, Or jack your car up in the rear [ so it's going downhill all the time ]
  5. Ring Bevan at (07) 5782400 He's got a few [in that $$$ range]
  6. The M52 2.8 Engine will wake up in the top-end if you install an intake manifold off a M50 2.5 [ the 2.8 manifold is basically the same as a 2.0 manifold ] The Yanks claim about 35hp with this. but I would assume thats with Exhaust [ And Cams??] to recover a bit of lost bottom end torque go to: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=544874 You have to be honest to yourself about how you intend to use it. HP= TQ x RPM so if you get more airflow thru the motor , you have to rev it. [consider dropping the rear end ratio as well ] Me personally : I would increase the capacity, and leave the car tractable [ & maybe use NOs if I needed to blow someones doors off, which would be less than 1/10% of usage ] BIG is GOOD [ mega]
  7. Yeah 9litres A 4.25" stroke and 4.53" bore. we are aiming at 650 to 680hp which is quite lazy [ torqey ] the engine builders in the states say they shift gears at 7500 with this combo [ drag racing ] A merlin made up to 2500hp so I'll be way off the pace at 27%HP for 33% capacity. When Ford made the Merlin for RR during WW2 they started tightening up all the tolerences [ they started getting good performance out of them] I have a mate in Bakersfield that builds them for pylon racers [ those dudes are brave]
  8. Thanks for that guys, I'd appreciate contact numbers when available. What I am trying to build is a low-down trackable torque monsta [ I'm spoiled with the corvette's 659 ft/lb's ] I am even considering using a T/B and AFM off a M50B20 to get velocity [ BMW already use the 2 litre intake ] If you do your maths a 328 with a 2.93 rear end pulls the same amount of air at 100kph as a 320 with a 4.10 rear ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the subject of my Corvette, I'm getting a bored & stroked shortblock from Fresno in the States [ they offset sleeve a production block with the correct casting numbers to keep it legal ] The capacity is 550 inches [ 9 litres ] so it should produce enough torque to compensate for my driving abilities The engine will be Legal in Historics [ in the spirit of the sport, um ????????? ] should be fun
  9. OK everybody out there [ I need a bit of input here ] I've got a '94 325 [ vanos ], with the unuser friendly Siemens DME. I also have a dead 328 [ M52B28 ] engine loom and DME lying around. What I would like to do is Stroke the 2.5 out to 2.8 [ both have the same bore, & deck height ] Now, would the Siemens 325 DME run OK with the extra 300cc of capacity???? [ I have heard they can't be tuned ] The 328 DME is no good as it is EWS II [ my car doesn't have EWS ] Help from someone knowledgable would be appreciated Regards Kerry
  10. Thanks Mate! I intend to I met so good people thru this forum [ that are now friends ] I had a very busy [ hell ] year. So when a bit of sh*t happened , I just stood aside an concentrated on other issues I'm back with a mission [ has Will lifted the limiter on the 327 eater yet? Haha ] She's all good Mate!!!!
  11. As far as I know Cruise control is the only issue [ for us ] Will is a bit concerned about his "traction control" which is part of his auto set up [ it changes up to kill torque] I would leave the trans computer plugged in [ but dormant ] and see how it goes. I won't charge Will too much for my labour, to come to northland and unplug it for him , if he needs to [ Bourbon is Cheap ] PS; I got onto Bimmerforums in the states, [ their threads about Manual conversions ] 90% of their postings was about the "Check Engine Light" or " Trans Fault Light" or " Cruise Control Issues " If people are that lazy that they want cruise control [ in NZ] they should stick with the slushbox.
  12. Ok All you people, I used to make shocky's [ Dampers] and rebuild them for Gabriel in the 80's A Bilstein is a Monotube shock with a gas charged "floating piston" to take up the displacment of the rod [ or it'll hydraulic and burst ] The Koni is just a well engineered conventional "twin tube" shock [ the outer wall is a reservoir , whereas on the bilstein it's the cylinder ] plusses & minuses for both! dent a billy and it's Fuct, but a billy has greater cylinder wall area so it will still dampen shock loads when it gets hot , because of heat expansion [ that why rally cars use them ] The only thing that normally wears [ excluding damage ] is the O-ring on the piston and the seal that the shaft goes thru [ these things are swimming in oil ] causing leakage past both Also Heavy Duty shock-oil is actually ATF The hardest part about rebuiding both was recharging the gas
  13. Neither Mate! [ I have been logging on anonymously ] Apart from being a boring old man [ working long hours ] I've also been in China. Back in May 07 I offered to repair a gearbox for free [ for grinding low bimmer ] and post a thread to help members out [ giving the popularity of manual conversions etc ] The sh*t fight that happened after that offer [threats were made ], caused me to back off for a while [ hopefully the smoke has cleared by now ] I didn't need to cause any animosity between members [ members taking sides etc ] Hey we all like to Bullshit cars [ and women], they both cause us trouble I'll see how it goes from now Glenn!
  14. Damm Westy mods [haha!] Do not bridge the inhibiter switch at the shifter plug [ cruise control doesn't work if the car thinks it is in neutral ] There is a yellow/red wire in the steering column [ from key], bridge that to the brown wire on the plug that went to the Auto shifter [ everthing will work then ] Will you can bypass all the OBD II problems by using a Mallory twin-point distributer and a Holley Carb [ you'll need side cutters to fix the diagnostic problems though ]
  15. I put a 328 ZF conversion into my 320 Coupe Everything swapped over [ I Mean Everything ] The Engine Computers are the same, The auto loom is a bit different so the Trans computer can get data from the Engine thats all. Just unplug the Trans Computer, pull the trans fault light from the dash. Splice in the reverse lights, and Bypass the starter inhibiter in the shifter console to the key , And Its Done I did this swap 1 year ago, So what I'm saying here works [ even the reverse chimes, & cruise control ] Does anybody want a free trans computer for a paperweight?
  16. Kevin at Kelfords is one of the best in the business [ he does R&D for Cosworth USA ] more locally I would give CSL cams in Palmy a try. I assume the #'s 304 and 284 are advertised duration. The longer the duration, the less cylinder pressure you get [because of overlap & timing etc ] In an all out circuit car, I would use the fatter cam but try and get the compression up to 12 to 12-1/2: 1 [cams & high compression can mask poor volumetric eficiency, NASCAR restricter plate engines were up to 18:1 comp at one stage ] If you want you car to pull off the corners [like a rally car] use the shorter cam, or a bigger engine [or both ]
  17. Hi I will have available a M50B20 " vanos" with loom and DME soon. [ I'm in Tauranga, so call 07 5445624 ] cheers Kerry
  18. I just fried the Starter on my E36 [ the key jammed on , so she's fukt ] if anyone has a goody that they want to part with? Call me 027 4726071 Kerry also wanting the drivers door rubber for an E36 coupe
  19. Sounds like an earth shorting problem! What you need to do is break the circuit somehow [using your favorite Ball-peen hammer on the bulb should do the trick] Most pads have built-in wear-indicators, They usually screech when they wear down to the metal backings. When you hear this noise,it is advisable to change your pads [otherwise you'll need to change your pants when your brakes don't work]
  20. I'd like to point out that the Police Dept don't have insurance, They'd be setting a good example straight away [remember that f**kwit that put a squad car in the ditch on the TARGA, while trying to prove he was a good driver] Mind you who would insure them? [the average Cop couldn't drive a nail into sand]
  21. At $2.00 a sprint??? 100 runs a night x 365 days a year x 20years = $1,460,000 which is about $40 grand shy of the resource management fees required to build a track these days and the F**KEN GOVT bitch when racing takes place on the street The resource management act nearly stopped a burn-out contest in TGA a few years ago When you do your Maths, the Fines, and risk of confiscation ends up being a shitload cheaper than trying to cut thru all the red tape WE DON'T HAVE A "BOY RACER" PROBLEM AT ALL [we have issues with people complying with the rules of society]
  22. I saw a Biker Bitch that had a T-shirt that read "KNEES IN THE BREEZE, IS MY ONLY DISEASE" I wonder if this had a double meaning?
  23. The only garanteed way to fix this "problem" is to outlaw cars [then we'll all be racing quarter horses down the main drag! Yeeeehah!] Sensible modification laws? I grew up when there were no modification laws ,I chucked a 440ci magnum motor in a valiant, my brother had a 351windsor in a 100E Prefect [with drum brakes & the firewall gas axed out] Everyone around had either a V8 MK4 Zephyr or a V8 Victor When I got my license, the MOT couldn't issue a ticket if you got on private property [talk about encouraging us to race them] My old man raced flathead V8's & Mk1 Zephyrs, I raced Fairlanes, Valiants & Mustangs. The kids after me had series 1 RX7's, now they have Evo's & Scooby's Compulsory Insurance? We already have compulsory drivers licences, WOF's & Registration [& DIC laws], That doesn't stop people [we have this "IF I GET CAUGHT" mentality] The problem is the ALLUREMENT OF DANGER and The FORBIDDEN FRUIT mentality. If events were organised, a very small percentage would show up. If Boy racers were legislated out of existence, everything would go underground [this would appeal to many as being more Badass than before] One thing about 'hardcore' Boyracers Their vocation requires some serious financing! Eventually these characters will grow up & swap their cars for houses, boats, businesses etc [they have a better future than someone ingrained into the drug culture] One final suggestion. What the Cops need to do [with their financial resources], is have a piece of private road where they can race [& hopefully beat] the street racers while putting the cars up for stakes [racing for the pink slips] That would eventually take people off the street [it would be a novel undercover sting that I would volunteer to help out with]
  24. Just like to point out: there is only ONE person in history that really understood politics! His name was GUY FAWKES! LEE HARVEY OSWALD came a close 2nd [we need these 2 characters in NZ now!]
  25. The problem with todays society is all the laws that restrict civil liberty's, nearly every f**ken thing we do is illegal [especially when things go wrong] The main problem with the laws we have,is that nobody will take personal responsibility for their own actions. If you teach a kid to handle alcohol responsibly, you get prosecuted for supplying liquor to a minor, If a Cop gives a kid a whack for misbehaving they've now commited assault etc etc etc! And everyone is always willing to blame someone or something else Combine this with the "Forbidden Fruit" mentality, and you can see how it fuels these clandestine activities Face it! whenever we swap "war stories" about our past experiences,it's nearly always the naughty sh*t we got up to that we remember most. The more the establishment try and "stamp out" boy racers, the more it will thrive YOU CAN'T OUTLAW FUN
