I'm not questioning that the car is worth $8k in undamaged condition. I can see that is possible. I question why the insurance is writing it off when it has been suggested by the seller that it can be repaired for a small outlay. Obvious more information on the condition of the car is necessary.

You've lost me in there somewhere. You're claiming the car has a few hundred $$$ damage but the ins. is going to write is off and pay $8000. Improbably. Ins. Cos. are in business to make money. Used parts are readily available in the UK, I can't see why the insurance wouldn't fix it, even if it cost $2000. It must have structural damage requiring repair and recert. That's my $0.02 worth.

These cars really aren't *that* stiff. But if you want to take the edge off it for cheap, since the handling isn't the issue for you, take off those silly 17" wheels and put on a nice set of 15" wheels with 205-60-15 H-speed rated tyres. You can sell the 17" ones and make a profit. The bigger side wall and softer (lower speed rating) 15" tyres will take the edge off the ride.

Yes, you've hit on the crux of the problem, which I had overlooked. The mountings are qutie different between 4cyl and 6 cyl models.The top mount has a bolt and nut on the 4cyl, the 6cyl has a threaded hole in the mount. I have a chance to get an 140A 320i (E36, 1994) alternator for cheap, would be nice to have as a spare if ti will fit directly on my 1997 318i (M44 engine). The look very similar though the 140A is bigger than the 90A and the 90A doesn't have a cooling duct like the 140A, but I figure it shouild be fine, if it will bolt up/fit...anybody know? TIA

Perhaps I was to specific :-) A 528i Touring Manual would be perfect.... yet in my 2 years in NZ I have never seen one for sale. Should have imported one when I first arrived...to late now :-( Thanks, everyone, for your input. Cheers, James

I'd like a 525i or 530i wagon with manual gearbox. Can anyone tell me if they even exist in NZ? I've never seen one for sale in the 2 years I've been here. Have only seen 3 3-series manual wagons (with 6's). Starting to consider that. What's the deal? Thanks.
