    E39 540i

Any help E39 Sedan 540i (M62) FYL 20 GF12871 First rego NZ 27 May 2011 Japan Oct 2001 assembled March 2001 The E39 has been around for a while now and age is starting to catch up with them hence the need to be sure and check them out completely by people who know them and their faults. The e39 is not prefect by any means and they do have a heap of faults as others have touched on suspension front thrust arms, control arms, sway links, rear suspension arms and ball joints, slack steering box (540 have recirculating ball type not rack and pinion),cooling system complete, oil leaks from various places i.e steering res around motor and some can be a pita to fix plus the 80kg extra motor weight but you do get the extra torque though. The nav set up ( if Japanese type and fitted ) will not work in NZ needs to have the computer replaced as for the steering wheel would look better with the later one fitted imo. The headlights are pron to brake the adjusters as they become brittle over time also they can fog up if subjected to temperature differences with blocked breathers. The boot wiring can brake due to the opening and closing action of the boot, tail light seals need to be tight as water drain age flows near them if they leak it can course all sorts of problems. Just be careful and check it out from top to bottom as for it's age K's and the asking price it is at the top end imo good look no matter what the out come..

  4. Would have to agree with Ron my 530 even in town was around 10l /100 and less on the highway. Get it checked out have the thing fully scanned ( by someone that knows what to look for) and stick a tube up the exhaust to check the exhaust gases. Just out of interest what transmission, final drive ratio do you have?
  5. Have for sale parts left over from donor car a e46 325i M sport sedan and some others bits due to the numbers no pics sorry. Check out the following links anything of interest just ask some of these are on trademe also. http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/Allanson...e1ce-1.jpg.html http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/Allanson...7407-1.jpg.html http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/Allanson...2068-1.jpg.html http://s1146.photobucket.com/user/Allanson...2080aa.jpg.html
  6. Hi Jamie if you haven't already check the sealing gaskets around the tail lights if these leak on a e39 they can course some electric problems and a lakes as you have found.
  7. Hi, possibly the best move to get them made up if you don't have the gas set up. As for the hoop no you have to go round the drive shaft 360 degrees and have a minimum of 2 ten mm bolts a side(ten mm shaft dia) retaining it to the body ie ten mm bolt through a 50x 60x 5 mm or 3,000 sq mm area washer, car floor any spacers to make a solid contact ( if required) and the attaching point from the hoop then a shack proof washer or nylock nut. As were to find these should be in LVT spec I went and had a chat to the guy who does the cert's in our area and he went through their spec book with me and showed me what they go by.

    Car Fails...

Was it a 318? to boot
  12. Looking into the idea of swapping interior rear mirrors. Present mirror is basic manual type with clown nose it has two wires assume for either alarm warning or central locking sensor but unsure. Mirror I wish to use is a auto dip type from donor car 325i "M" sport with infrared remote sensor has five wires going into it. Would it be as simple as activating the auto dim part ie a wire to fuse 67 and the reverse switch just unsure what if anything needs done with the remote side of things any advise or thoughts please.
  13. http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_...port-review.htm Depends on what gen of run flat you are talking about up gen 3 I believe and they seem to have ironed out a few of the problems from the previous one's.
  14. A quick Google and around an average price of $6500 US depending on what spec level http://www.theautochannel.com/autoparts/us.../2010-335i.html
  15. I assume the insurance have written this off as they work on a percentage cost of the vehicle per the repair cost??? and what would something like this sell for not bent up like this one of course. Even the visible damage looks bad but what is hidden could be a lot worse. Could one even recover the asking price in spares from it???
  16. Hi Steve, Just check on the sq mm needed to comply as I believe you can use 50x5 mm flat for the hoop as a min but need to have 3,000sq mm (50 x60mm) area for the retaining washer or such something odd like that. IF the drive shaft did let go having built the hoop like a tank could just be that saving factor a pain in the rear I know.
  17. What about that FSU The pedal pulsates The steering wheel shimmy Is that my vanos rattling What oil should I put in my box They didn't even scratch the surface with things on a E39 haha,

    e39 540

Hi Jamie While you have the rear parcel tray out to get at the rear shocks haha and want to have a look at the slide bushes on the rear sun curtain arms. As I had the same happen on mine and found they are plastic and wear so as the arms applied pressure they twisted slightly in the track and jam but with a tap on the arm the curtain would go up. If that is the problem I make some new one's out of aluminum window extrusion and used small nuts and bolts instead of the rivets along with some grease to help lub them. But be careful not to twist or apply pressure to the upper curtain rail or arms as you remove it the guide bushed snap real easy as I found out. They are bloody expensive as one has to replace the whole thing no spare parts are listed.
  19. Ask the guy to give you the part number of the rack and check on it. Others may chip in but I think the rack in the E46ti I have is just under 3 full turns lock to lock and the 325 sedan was around 3 and quarter lock to lock not sure what the Z's were.

  22. From Wikipedia "The word classic means something that is a perfect example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality. The word can be an adjective (a classic car) or a noun (a classic of English literature). It denotes a particular quality in art, architecture, literature and other cultural artifacts. In commerce, products are named 'classic' to denote a long standing popular version or model, to distinguish it from a newer variety. Classic is used to describe many major, long-standing sporting events. Colloquially, an everyday occurrence (e.g. a joke or mishap) may be described as 'an absolute classic'." Somebodies idea of what it takes to be classic http://www.autoblog.com/2005/06/29/what-makes-a-classic-car/ The yanks take of a classic http://www.roaring-20s.org/main/classic_cars.htm And so it goes on for me it will be the cars of the era I grow up in and can remember Mustang 68, 57 Cheve, Holden Monaro the first one, Ford escort, sierra cosworth, 3ltr capri and others common enough cars sure but then you have the Jags, Astins, BMW 328/327, 504, Porsche 911 it is in the eyes of the beholder.
