  5. Ok, found the negative terminal was only twist on tight. Battery did not show green state of charge. Terminal connections clean and tight Had battery checked out and found it has 11 06 stamped on post if so it's coming up seven years old. Upon load testing on the third time it did not recover above 9 volts So got it re- charged and it then checked out ok but I know I'm up for a new battery shortly. Installed the battery and secured the terminals cranked it up and still have a washer bottle light and air bag light showing bugger , suggestion please or is it time for a scan. TIP do not close the tail gate/ hatch on a Ti with the battery disconnected.

    Quick Questions

Hi Matt would be asking some searching questions about it. What sort of flywheel was the original 316i running and what is the M52b28 running solid or dual mass as different clutch plates and possibly different pressure plates are required. If as you say a standard 316 clutch is being used with a 2.8ltr motor and no extra clamp pressure on the pressure plate I wouldn't hold out it lasting to long unless driven quietly. Also would a 4 cylinder clutch set up even fit the M52 b28 flywheel.

  10. "Can the thermostat in e39s be changed without removing the fan?" Any thing is possible but it could be difficult and painful on the hands removing the fan is not hard. All you need is a rubber mallet or hammer, 12" crescent if you don't have a 32mm spanner a quick smack and undo the nut. OH it's a left hand thread so you will have to try and tighten it to undo it. Then remove fan shroud all done makes life so much easier.
  11. Even doing 30k trip you should be getting better fuel consumption than that mine did no worse than 735k to a tank of gas 95 oct and 750k on 98 open road running and not being nanny From cold start up how long, distance wise does it take for the temp gauge to reach it's normal reading? The thermostat on my old 2001 530 had electrically connection to the DME and this failed so instead of operating temp being reached very quickly, less than 2k it took some time to reach operating temp replaced the thermostat and problem solved. Have you checked the idle control valve these get sticky and can jam. Vacuum lines/ air lines, I found two rubber plugs at the back of the inlet manifold one of these had gone hard and split open plus the take off from the main air intake has a plastic plug outlet for a couple of hoses check their just a thought. Engine breathe tubing had one split down by the dip stick. Just a few other items if not already mentioned MAF on the way out, air filter, spark plugs, crap in the air box, inlet ducting.
  12. ooopss What happened to all the electronic gadgets were they switched off or just driver error ? I'm sure that it will all buff out
  13. What year are you looking at Andy? Have heard the 2.4ltr engines are not bad but the 2.8 have given trouble the 3ltr engine is a little more robust. Fuel wise the 2.0ltr one I drove was not that good can't comment on either the 2.4 or 2.8 petrol versions. As for rust Graham got most of the areas covered , rear door window screen /seal, check the roof area also.
  14. Ok, Checked the rear fog light and it was not functioning so I pulled the light switch out and checked the wires all in the correct place according to the WDS wiring diagram. Next I removed the control face plate from the light module and swapped the module for another one I had and installed it. Turned both the ignition and park lights on, the warning light on the cluster has gone and the rear fog light works. But the brake light bulbs are glowing also when the parks light are on. So I depress the brake pedal and the brake lights glow full on as they should do, thought it could be a faulty brake switch tried another one no luck still the same also tried a larger earth. To add insult to injury this morning when I started the car their is now a washer bottle warning light and an airbag light on.The bottle is full of fluid and the float in the front bottle seems to go up and down. Does the rear bottle have the same as I have not checked that out yet? the air bag light comes on when you turn the key on, start the engine then goes out for a few seconds then comes back on. Beginning to think scan time or does anyone have some helpful suggestions.
  15. Do what Brent has suggested. Also ask the owner for the service history not just oil service and any thing else he knows about the car. If you want to go further with it get it checked out by a BMW specialist it is a 12 year old vehicle and thing as you know wear out.
  16. Turned the park lights too on in the Ti and the right rear tail light appears to have the brake light working as well as the park light. Have checked the wires in the tail light connector and in the light switch they appear to be in their correct location can anyone help out.
  17. Yes I have on a 2001 facelift 530i and a 540.
  18. DMD 2 First rego NZ 24 August 2006 Rego Japan November 2001 JR 01174 Assembled October 2001 "Ticking Bomb" at 192,k's and 12 years old one would need to research this carefully and find out what has been done and how it has been driven, Chassis re-enforce plates, the usual maintenance stuff and more being a "M3". To many unknowns the price is more than I would like to pay for it even with out doing any research on it. Go have a look and let us know what you find under the shiny paint work.
  19. http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/494750 This is for the pre face lift if yours are face lift then I used an oven set at 60 c for 5 minutes to soften the sealing compound strip the headlight of ever thing first.
  20. "Good Lord" who did they let loose on that. The general body shape is ok but maybe it should be left on top of an incline with the hand brake off and let gravity go to work. The arse end, front end, lights, kidneys, wheels and the interior colour combo.
  21. Have a read it might give you a clue http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticl...-Brake-Shoe.htm
  22. $80.00 for a owners hand book if that is was you are meaning from a dealer not bad. The one for my 2002 ti was $76.00 odd and it is still on a shelf in Germany. Who have you tried in the UK or even Germany should be a second hand one some were.
  23. Hi, if you use a heat gun be careful as you can melt things very quickly. Their is a write up on how to do it I have used the oven method 60 C for 5 minutes from memory strip every thing you can off the headlight and pop it in the oven. The adjusters for the pre face lift and face lift headlights with angel eyes are the same you can get an alloy type but not cheep. Once you have the headlights open and the old adjusters out before you fit the new adjusters cut a new thread in them it makes it a lot easier come final assemble also make sure every thing is dry and all the vent tubes are clean. These lights love to fog up on you if you don't keep them dry.It is fiddle be patient and don't force things unless you have plenty of $$$$$ to give to the dealers.

    Project Tim update

Hi Neal, This project has been a learning curve and steep at times. As for an expert on E46's I would say not just know a lot more about them mechanically and electrically. The electronics's on the car is my weak area just knowing what gear one needs to be able to carry out a scan how to turn on/off things with out stuffing it up etc.
