Thats interesting to know. Mines a 95. I dont know a lot about the E36 chassis and haven't had this one up on the hoist yet to know whats wrong with it. The symptoms fit with a stuffed guibo but I guess I wont know until I can actually get under it for a look. Just had a look on realoem and it appears I do have the guibo(universal Joint). BIG thanks to Andy who spotted a bit of missing trim in the pics and sent it to me gratis. I owe ya for that one.

Gotta say. I really like driving this car. I've gotten used to the big V12 and do enjoy driving that but theres something to be said for being able to really throw this little E36 around the corners. Been having a blast driving it around..lol

Yeah I saw that. Was a Jap import in 2005 so some numbnuts didn't know what they were getting registered. Though how a car dealer couldn't know the difference between a coupe and sedan beats me.

Couldn't help myself when this came up. It needs a bit of work. New guibo, headliner and a few other small things like fog lights but it's been well maintained and was only sold because the owner thought the trans was completely stuffed. I kinda feel a bit bad not telling him about the guibo but it was a good bargaining point..lol Anyway. Here it is.

Nice car Mark. I may have a spare at home. I'll have a look when I get back. You could also look at upgrading to the 16:9 display. All it would take is the display and the module from the boot. All plug and play.

It's a definite clunk that can be felt through the transmission tunnel inside the car and it increases with the sped of the car. After a lot of reading online it seems the Guibo might be the culprit. I need to go back for another look at it and make an offer on the car. If I do get it it'll have the reg put on hold and put in the shed for a winter project.

Hey Pete. I had a possible deal in the works for a swap. A 740i, 750il and 728i all for my 750i but that has since fallen through. Yeah. I'd like to see it go to someone who will care for it.

It's an auto and it's not just one clunk. It's a regular clunking that increases with speed and the whine I described was more of a whistle that also increased with revs. Sort of tempted. The rest of the car is pretty decent. As to the video Geordie. I got rid of the particular whine a few months back.. lol

I'm looking at a E36 328i that the current owner said has a stuffed transmission. I took it for a drive yesterday and it had a severe clunk in 1st 0that could be felt through the transmission tunnel and a bit of a whine. Has anyone had any experiance with these symptoms. Before I make an offer it'd be nice to know if it is the trans which might be more than the cars worth or the Guibo which for me would be a relatively easy swap. I dont have access to a hoist though could jack it up. Will I be able to see past the exhaust to check the Guibo if I jack it up and get under it?

$6500 if anyone here wants it.

Hi Mark. I've still got it though recently decided it's seriously time it went. I haven't seen many Pre Facelift 750i's in NZ. I saw a silver one a few years ago on TM. Will be looking froweard to seeing some pics of yours.

Welcome to the forum. Nice Bimmer.

Great progress. Nice to see it coming back together. Has there been any more progress since August?

I followed this build from the beginning and it's gone through a progression of wheels. Here are a few of his past choices. It'd be nice if the S62 drivetrain was as cheap and accessible as it is in the US. Started with M-Pars. He's always had great taste in cars. Heres his last E38.

I do like shots of a nicely cleaned and polished car but theres also something to be said for shots like these with a car thats been "driven" to a stunning location. Very cool.

Thanks. This particular project has been put on hold while I get my 4x4 van sorted for this summer. Certified self contained is the goal and I'm nearly there. About all I need to do on the 750i now is get it repainted and that probably wont be for a while yet either as the money for that might get spent on bigger wheels, bull bar and winch for the van. lol

Yep, still going strong. Here's a pic of it's last real outing with the Wellington guys when we did the trip over the Gentle Annie to Napier. It get's a weekly drive just to keep everything moving. I haven't done a lot to it recently as all my efforts have been going into getting my 4x4 van ready for the summer.

2001 e38 728IA Restoration Services or Advice
kulgan replied to proteusboy's topic in General Discussion
Another E38 junkie here. I think it comes down to you balancing the costs of what you want as others have said. Very nice examples of 728i's come up for sale all the time however if your attached to the car you already own then spend the money and keep it. But then again that'll depend on what your talking about doing and the depth and quality of the restoration your talking about. Would be nice to see some pics of your car and some kind of idea about the work you'd like done to it. -
Welcome to the forum. Nice cars you have there. The guys in Auckland have a monthly coffee meet. Check it out in the meeting sub section. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to see you along.

Nice. I like the look of these.

Welcome to the forum. Luv your car. Beautiful. Will be looking forward to to seeing it at a meet sometime.
