  1. 540i will use less petrol cruising that the small 525i or 528i will struggling to move the weight around. i would go for the 540i over the 530i (i did) but biggest thing is maintenance, same stuff on both, cooling systems are a must, they really are when rather than if.
  2. ok so ive been planning a 24v e30 for a while now. slowly building up some parts. i was always planning on getting a damaged e36 328i so i could strip all the running gear out and sell off any excess parts. that would leave me with a m52b28. well opportunity came knocking and ive ended up with a 1999 e46 328i. difference being its the m52TUb28 engine. i cant find to much online but does anyone know if being dual vanos will vastly change the electric side of things? Also as a twist of fate i swung the story of how good of a car the e46 was to the girlfriend and instead of saying ok and leaving me to it, shes decided that she wants it as an upgrade to her car. so who knows i may end up tracking down a new bumper and recomplying it but i would really like to see that engine on my bench.
  3. i prefer to do my own dentistry so i can see the connection.
  4. presuming m5 ownership isn't a prerequisite i would be keen, would be happy if price stayed under $20ish.
  5. ive had this a few times on various cars, mostly with normal leads rather than coil packs. nothing serious just dry out and go, but its much better to sue a good degreaser and low pressure water pouring out of a garden hose, especially around electrics.
  6. i would start with a high quality diff oil and see if the whine goes away. if not worst case maybe a few hundred for bearings, best case $50 if they are generic
  7. ive got an incar camera too. just a pain that the e39 cig lighter stays live, ive recorded the wall outside work all day on a couple of occasions.
  8. cant remember the last time i hear a cop say that was a tragic loss of life but it wouldnt have happened if they were doing 6kph less.
  9. its all marketing. the first time they did the 4kph tolerance everyone stayed under control because they were thinking about it. now the novelty has worn off so they have to make it a bigger deal to get people to think about it. hence threatening to do it all the time. if they bring it in they lose the ability to wake people up during busy periods. the same reason that speed kills tv ads no longer exist, people stopped watching.

    anyone on here

as much as we can toot about performance of the car, if he got off on that precedent then lambos would be able to do 300kph. im sure it was low risk compared to other things he could have done but still silly.
  11. sounds like something isnt assembled correctly. nobody left a rag inside the intercooler did they?

    anyone on here

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/9435699/The-fast-and-hes-furious strangely enough i can kind of see his logic but still cant expect to get that ruling overturned.

    Ouch

    so why is this ouch?
  14. my neighbour put a 4m wide steel tube in the gutter as that area had angled curbs but no cut outs for driveways. worked great unless he lined up perfectly on it in which case it occasionally turned into a dyno roller when he planted it to go up the hill, made heaps of noise
  15. feel for you glenn. seems to be the downside of the internet forums. people take help but they dont see that you are a business. people also seem to forget that local suppliers pay gst that private imports neglect. and having bought local you gain the consumers guarantees act coverage, and expert knowledge, and same day service, and no risk of shipping loss and often they will take parts back if you bought the wrong thing. bit of a toss up but annoying when people only think of cost when they condemn pricing.
  16. the even better respected forum mods are very helpful. if you are having an ongoing issue best to talk to them. if its all over then best keep it to yourself
  17. that second one is another osciallting one, much better than the cheap ones though. as you say prob best to cut with the one you bought and finish on something like that. meguires sell a kit that gets you two polishers and all the pads you will need to do a pro job. but that costs around $3000
  18. these type of machines oscillate so it makes it very hard to over do it, but they are slow. the grinder style machines spin so are much better and faster but you can burn the paint or create swirls. they are typically around $100- $120 . bear in mind usually they have adjustable speeds, the top speed is designed for polishing metals etc so dont go much past half way. more important is the type of polish you use, most are course and designed for hand use. meguires do a good range in beige bottles designed for machine use. (upside is they are silicon free so paint shop safe (silicon is very very hard to get off to paint over)) cant remember their name but they come as a medium cut cleaner, fine cut polish and possibly a wax. i have been told very good things about the foam cutting pads such as these http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/Velocity-Cutting-Pad-Wave-Foam-Velcro-200mm.aspx?pid=321085#Cross apparently they hold polish in rather than spinning it off and are better at going around corners and edges without creating too much pressure. a good machine designed polish acts very different to a standard hand polish. a hand polish contains abrasive that stays very course. a good polish lets the abrasive break down further and further hence giving a finer and finer polish. on my 540i someone has polished it with a machine going far to fast at some stage, the leading edge of the boot lip spolier has the paint stripped off down to the plastic, and the same where the bootlid drops in to the number plate recess, not very noticable on a black car but annoying all the same. i would recomend either taping off or removing the plastic and chrome trims, removing them might take a while but it saves you hand polishing around them and trying to get the residue off later on. and again make sure the car is properly cool, like not in the sun since the day before, and cool air temp is better. also very very clean car, any dirt particles stuck in the pad are going to scratch the paint.
  19. must be honest i didnt read the whole story as im using as mobile. is this based just for bmw systems or designed to be entirely universal?
  20. might be a good oppertunity to do a base and race spec model. many guys starting out will be happy with a cheaper option and possibly having to manualy fix a button etc later on. whilst other guys will be happy to pay more for gt3/f1 spec materials. same deal with plastic Vs carbon fibre casings.
  21. Great to see good kiwi minds at work doing something productive we can export to the world
