  4. Hey Team, Next week I will be tackling the head gasket on my m20b25! I have everything (I hope) except for a place where I will take the head to be resurfaced and perhaps hot washed/steamed? etc. If anybody has had any good experiences anywhere in Wellington let me know! Also if there is anything else you think I should know (tips 'n' tricks) holla. Wish me luck Thanks, Toby
  5. i remember there being a thread on here for this exactly but I can't find it!! I think Brent's was 530,000 if i remember correctly. If someone finds it post it up! Im at 323,000km, just blew the headgasket. Other than that it's totally original :-)

    E30 help

Exactly what I have heard before. Like I said, I have only driven a 325i. The sound of the 6 cylinder is of course going to be much nicer than the 318 though.
  9. it's cool that you don't just want any E30, you want this one. I think I would feel the same way about mine too. Something about them aye. Good luck I hope you find it!

    E30 help

Welcome! You probably already know this but after buying my first E30, being patient and waiting for the right one really payed off. E30's come and go on trade me pretty often. I was looking on trade me everyday for about 6months before I found mine. I've never driven one, but I've always heard that the 320i is inferior to both the 318i and 325i. There are quite a few manuals around too, just keep an eye out. E30's produced after 1987 are the facelift models and have an upgraded motronic ecu system but there's not a huge difference between them. The facelift might be a bit better on fuel. Other than that just make sure you get one that has been well serviced. I'd say you should be able to get nice manual for around 4k. I got lucky with my manual 325i - $1.5k. Good luck! You probably knew a lot of what I just said but it can't hurt haha. Hope I helped a little :-)
  11. Are you happy to post to Wellington? (or any idea how much it might cost) If so i'll take em
  12. Hey man, Are the injectors in good working condition? Refurbished or otherwise how many km on them? Would be a nice little upgrade for my E30 I reckon
  13. Is no bmw but spotted a Delorean yesterday!! No pictures but man it was cool.

    Quick Questions

Only place I've found redline is BNT, and that's where I got mine (as well as some other redline oils). I'm no tradey either! haha. It's cheaper for a trade account, but they definitely do public too. At least the one in Wellington does. Or you could get it from trade me http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/oil-additives/auction-779568757.htm You're right, it definitely can't hurt! I'd say it's good maintenance, and it's not very expensive at all. Go for it

    Quick Questions

I can't answer your other questions, but I can tell you about my experiences with fuel injector/system cleaner I bought Red Line SI-1 fuel system cleaner. It is considered to be the best fuel system cleaner that is relatively cheap, easily available (In the US), and has the highest amount of polyether amines (PEA) for the price. This is a critical ingredientfor fuel system cleaning. I did quite a bit of research before committing to it. The changes were very minor. The car felt a tiny little bit more responsive, and that was about it. No miracle stories like some people talk about on amazon. I can't say anything bad about it though, I just expected more from it in a 27y/o car that - judging by the condition of some of the filters - wasn't very well maintained before me and probably never had a fuel system cleaner used. Maybe our fuels are of a higher quality than those overseas. I'm not sure Anyway, if you're going to do it, go with redline. $20 for a bottle (treats 1 tank) from BNT. Good luck !
  16. Same! Wheels washed and tyres shined too. Fortunately no rain!
  17. nice. I am interested in doing this swap myself sometime. Not too difficult is it? What gearbox did you use?
  18. i want dis!! In wellington too... hmm Automatic.. hmm

    Quick Questions

As with engine oil, it's very controversial. I used Red Line 75w-90 gear oil. No complaints. Redline oil is known to be extremely quality - I use it everywhere I can. As for actually pumping it, I used the pump from a 1L radox bottle.... Like the hand soap pumps but bigger. Then I went to bunnings and bought some clear tubing that would fit around the output/nose/top (dunno what to call it). Worked a treat. Do a little google searching for the diff oil though. Has to be GL4 or something maybe its GL5 or maybe it's neither but if it's the wrong kind it will corrode or lead to premature failure of the diff. It probably says in the owners manual if you have it. Hope I helped and good luck!
  20. Thought it would be a good time for an update Good news, I think. I've been driving her a bit. All the symptoms I previously had are now all but gone. There is still some white steamy smoke out the exhaust, but that's how it was before this happened.... No more loss of power. Not loosing anywhere near as much coolant as I was. About the width of 2 fingers worth of coolant a week. So it's not great, but it's better. Then there's the idle. Before all of this happened I would idle at around 500rpm when warm. Now it sits perfectly at 750. I have done nothing with the engine. Not sure what happened ??? Anyway, I've ordered all the bits - including a torque wrench and some torx sockets. The total for everything (and some new BMW badges) was a bit under $500 NZD landed. I look forward to working on it. Never have I done any 'major' engine work like this. This is my first car after all. I've got a bentley manual and such so should be not too bad. My uncle might help me too. He's never pulled the head off a car - but he's 56. I figure all those extra years must help for something Wish me luck!
  21. Spotted a nice E30 325i Touring in Red. On basketweaves. Looked really nice. I want to buy it. Wish I left a note or something on the windscreen... In Wellington. Anyone here? plate APPXXX
  22. Will buy a torx socket set. I'll also need a torque wrench so I'll get ome of those. Haven't had luck with valve adjustments on the e30 thus far. Have done it twice and still taps. I'll try with the head off.
  23. Whether it's the head gasket or a cracked head I'll have to take the head off and will need new gaskets, timing belt, tensioner etc. I'm going to buy all sometime in the next few days, but I really don't want to forget anything. So far in the cart I've got: Valve cover gasket Exhaust manifold to downpipes gasket Alternator belt Power steering belt A/C belt Cambelt +tensioner Locknuts to replace the old rusty ones. (Exhaust to head nuts & Manifold to downpipes nuts) Cam seal + Oring Waterpump + gasket Head gasket Head bolts Is there anything else I should be doing? Also when it comes to getting the head machined, do I have to remove the cams? I'd also like to get the head hot washed so it's clean. Should I get the valve re-seated or anything similar like this? Cheers
  24. Perhaps bleed the cooling system. There is a bleed screw on the thermostat housing. Lots of write ups on google. Air in the system could be stopping the coolant from circulating causing it to overheat. Otherwise very likely to be the waterpump
  25. If it has no thermostat, then that is unlikey to be causing it to run hot. A thermostat stuck open would cause the engine to run cold. Having no thermostat is essentially the same thing as a stuck open one. I had one which was stuck open, so I can speak from experience. Not sure what else it could be (I'm pretty new to E30's too!) but I would be concerned if it was getting that hot with no thermostat....
