I'm toying with the idea of importing a parts car(or maybe compliable next year) E34/E39 diesel with a really good engine. the only issue is, the car will probably come from UK and the shipment will be more than the car's worth! What would be a good option to go diesel with these cars? Or should I just shelve that idea and keep on hunting for a E61 diesel?

Haha! Indeed it is sir. It has character, a needy one, but I am okay with it. The ABS light is intermittent, I may have to blame the tyres. I have Nankangs in front (which are okay) and Wanlis at the back (which are alright for now, thank goodness for dry weather) which may have caused the false abs sensor failure reading? oh well, cleaning the sensors are now first priority. Next WOF is in Feb 2014, so I'd like to have the car perfect by then....

^ Thanks mate. ABS light came up today. need to check the sensors and the like.

Mid to Late 2007. I do think UK got it late '07

Whoa, the wheels look evil, would look even more so with a thin pinstripe of HOT pink on just one edge (if you get what I mean)

It could be that the gearbox needs a service and reset, the pre-LCI 535ds tended to wear quickly and UK models seem to be prone to that. (Uncle's 535D touring in Cardiff is on its second gearbox, to be fair he had put 200k miles on the first)

The tired 530d I test drove had a slight transmission whine too, it had done 327k ks though.

Sunday update: :| The whole thing is back together, however :- 1. OBC is as dead as a nail. Is there a relay or something that is necessary to make it work? I find its rather odd. (maybe no power to pin 17?), also the pre f/l console frame sits differently so the trim doesn't sit flush 2. The wiring harness for the CD player is TOTALLY different, couldn't be bothered rewiring it at the moment though. 2. Too many broken clips in the car I blame the previous mechanics. 3. Temperature sensor harness is impossible to find 4. Ciggy lighter fuse keeps burning out. :/ my tapping of the lighter console couldn't have caused that, I need to check my (own) fuses. 5. smell from a/c is still there, gunk is still stuck on the core ... despite me spending a few hours vacuum cleaning it. 6. found the source of the road noise, the windscreen rubbers are perishing. need to renew. ugh. 7. Car runs better after the battery/ ECU reset. 8. washer pump is still leaking, albeit at a slower rate, need to find the cause. the seams on the pump are still fine though.. 9.replace a centre console bulb, but lost the whole thing when putting the console back I suppose this is why these are "project cars", enjoying every bit of these challenges though . I do have a question, where can i get a service light reset tool and a ECU/OBD reader ? do I even need it?

how much is that n54 worth though? I'd assume most of the parts in the engine bay should be fine? ( i could be wrong, the impact may have fudged the engine up)

Got the sword out to day and VOILA! there was no filter lol! just a burning leaf and other sh*t, the source of my troubles. must have broken a clip for the cover, boy was it a pain in the arse to put it back, it wobbles about a little, then again the cover does flex. the sword is amazing. on the other hand, I broke more clips for the "locking" connectors... :sigh: they are getting brittle eh? Anyway, the filters do not arrive for a while, so I will be putting it back together, even though I have yet to view the heater core. (that will have to wait i suppose, there is no need for it at the moment). Tomorrow, the leather clean will continue. Project cars are ongoing aren't they,

Haha yes indeed, I am attempting to get some parts from http://www.milland.co.nz/ , They are supposed to be quite good, [email protected] should be able to provide you with much parts. Otherwise, Forum sponsors like euro Italian and forty one automotive is good too.

Got that OBC from gtstarped. Quick guys, he still has parts from the E34 M5 he is parting out, the shell is going to the crusher on Tuesday. The OBC is deeper than the clock unit, so the housing has to be cut open. Secondly, the CD player has a different type of male pins compared to the tape deck, at first glance. I suppose I should try it out tomorrow to see if it is true. the IHKA controller is the same, except the older one is yellowed out. Going to splice in that 3 port lighter unit, just need to know which is +ve and -ve (i have the Haynes manual for cars up to '91, hope that would help). Zip ties obtained, black rather than clear. Rebuilding the glove flashlight will require some thinking, perhaps for another day. Finally, I'll be able to get the whole thing back together..after I clean out the airconditioning system.

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/constructio...iano-black.html I suppose I could follow this if need be.

All them broken V12s and DMEs.

Is this the one? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/...n-632643385.htm But seriously, there are more E31's on Trademe at the moment than E24's.
-
I believe the E31 had a large backlog of cars, as they sold really poorly in the latter years.

Is purchasing a 20 year old E34 sensible for a new car owner?

HAHA! Buying a twenty year old ANYTHING is not a sensible option. At this stage, we are buying what makes us feel good. (until the inevitable? mishap that is). But with regular maintenance, knowledge of where to get cheap parts, and the knowledge of talking to good mechanics and helpful forummers, I do not see why we can't use these twenty year old precision machines for another twenty years.. (or a fraction of that if you get weary). -
I see, Thanks for the info Jason! 5.48pm: GOOD NEWS! the rear washer pump is fixed! (cleaned out the contacts, and voila! it works fine ... ) I just need to get part #61661365657 which is the rubber grommet that goes below the pump. The rubber has perished ever so slightly, so it leaks out whenever the water level is too high for the seal to hold. looking around to source the part, or may even use a silicon sealant.

Yeah, It wasn't pleasant, further proof the car had been used for dogs and small children.

Interior in bits, waiting for quotes for some filters and a rear washer pump to come through. I had initially thought of refinishing the pump with a gasket sealant, but spending $10 on repairing a $46 dollar part seems ridiculous especially it is just a "bandaid" solution. I have also booked gtstarped's OBC and sensors from the M5 he was parting out. I hope to collect it on Friday or early Saturday morning, before I put the whole thing back together. I have also decided to splice an always on three port 12V lighter port through the centre console, as it is already accessible. I have yet to inspect the heater core as I do not have the cable ties needed to put it back together. :sigh: Having an old car is fun if you like putting it back together.
