What insurance company do you use?

Recommended Posts

Just purchased an E90 in anticipation for our move back to NZ. It has been some time since I have owned a car or lived in NZ so wanted to get peoples experiences with different insurers.

I have a clean history, am 30 years old and it will just be me listed on the insurance however I want others to be able to drive it if necessary (don't mind if the excess is high in these fringe secnarios as it won't happen often).

I use Classic Cover, pretty sure a few others here do,  good rates, pretty sure they are lump sum annual payment, no instalments

ASB were the best combination of price and coverage for us, but it was discounted for having 3 cars, contents and the house all through them

Everything with AMI, never had an issue at all (even with agreed value insurance etc on modified cars), good rates as well.

I find for daily drivers the policies themselves seem fairly generic across most main providers and their claims histories are probably similar too.  So it can just come down to price and service.

If you’re going to be insuring house and contents it is probably worth going for a general insurer for your daily driver.

But worth going for a specialist like Star Insurance or Classic for a second car/old-timer.

The main providers seem to have no capacity to deal with high-value older cars as increasingly demand formal valuations unless you want to settle for their algorithm-derived valuation.

People have good and bad experiences, seems Classic is getting a good rep here.  I have had multiple claims with AMI over the years and been with them since 1990, and have my Golf GTI daily insured with them, and never had an issue.  But my E30 and JCW GP are with Star as AMI weren’t so flexi for the valuations I wanted to have as agreed.

I have had great service with AA Insurance, who win awards repeatedly, but so far have never claimed.  They insured my old MX5.  I moved my house and contents to them based on their service and may move the daily to them next time it comes up, but will see what AMI can do too.

My preference is always to go with an agreed value policy, unsure if you even get market value ones anymore?

I've had most of my cars through Tower until the BMW, they wouldn't insure my Fiancee' as she's under 25. Not even at a higher rate, just out right wouldn't.

So I have the BMW through State. Previously had my RS Legacy Rally car through Ando I think it was. That was my most difficult car to insure for sure. Otherwise had a few through Classic Cover, and NAC.
I've never had to make a claim with any of them, so don't have any experience there.

I can swear by AA, have claimed with them a few times over the years, culminating with a writeoff. they are good with service imho. though may be worth getting it through your NZ bank.

There's only really 2 underwriters in NZ.

My 130 is insured with State, market value, it was convenient and not too expensive. I recall it being much of a muchness between providers when I signed up, I think I spent less time waiting on the phone with State.

My M3 is insured with Swann's Classic Car policy which is agreed value and includes a number of other benefits and extensions including certain approved track or driver training days, first right of refusal if it's written off, etc.

But as will all insurance the devil is in the claims process and I've not had to claim on either of these policies so can't attest to that.

Have your claims with AMI usually been processed fairly quickly? I recently submitted a claim and it took them two weeks to get back to me. Wondering whether this is normal with them or I just had really bad luck. I know it's not the mechanic/panel beater's fault for the delay as they got back to me within a day or two.

With Classic Cover - to be fair I'm pretty low annual mileage - have put 14k on the clock in 6 years - so it works out most cost effective for me.

Star Insurance Modern hobby for the E46. Seem to be one of the few that had agreed value while being well priced @ $585 p.a.

Classic didn't want to insure my vehicle as it was too modern or generic according to them.

Reviving this thread - can anyone recommend a quality insurer for a road legal, race going, 1997 e36? Bit in between a classic with race/rally extension.

Classic Cover. They even cover my currently laid up racecar and all it's spares for like $300 a year.

Still with Classic Cover, no issues with them in the past with other cars.
