Manual 850CSI

Recommended Posts

Just hope there is no rust - that would make compliance  fun, not lol

And hope this gets saved regardless of investment v roi rational 😎

I remember this car! Back in the early days, this and the hell red Ex Singaporean 850csi were the only ones to grace NZ roads. A number crept into the country after these cars.

I heard that this car had a faulty AHK ( 4 wheel steering) system. Not sure if that was true. I was told it would cost $20k in NZ to repair. It was an option for all E31’s but the US 850csi’s didn’t have it as a standard option like the Euro 850csi’s. Apparently it really helps the handling!

Very curious to know what it’ll go for and what it’s worth back on the road all tidied up!

To be the downer I bet this will go to a dealer who will half ass restore it purely for profit. Would have been better to pick who you want it to go to.

Sorry mate! There was a Bimmersporter here many years ago ( and I thought his name was Brad) and he managed to bring in this ex UK, beautiful purple 850csi ( Daytona violet or Technoviolet- can’t remember which one). It had clocked some relatively big miles but he couldn’t get compliance due to a nasty case of rust. There was talk of transplanting parts from a donor car - but never heard anymore. Would have been a magnificent car in its hey-day.

This is happening with classic american Muscle cars too especially the ones that end up at auctions.

My guess would be $50-60k. This is gonna be a big project, at least requiring a bare metal respray.  Add it to some parts are gonna be unobtainable. The odometer is already at 160k.  I hope it goes to someone who puts in the $$ and effort and drives it on the road.

I brought in an 850CSi too (2013), from Ireland. Fjord Grey with light grey interior. Sold it for $38k about 6yrs ago now. It was blowing smoke (known to seller, had compression check, slipped rings) when sold and unfortunately on the trip to its new home the engine seized due to lack of oil (he burned that much of it on the trip home, it was topped up before sale). I don't think its yet made it back onto the road.

Why would it need a bare metal respray in your opinion?

Personally, I wouldnt pay anywhere close to $50k as presented, but I guess we shall see.

PS: All CSi's are manual! 😛

@Kodachrome

For the sake of compliance - it doesn't require one. But for the sake of bringing a RHD CSI back to all its glory - yes.

I wonder how many CSI’s are in NZ now? We had none originally ( Oz had 2-3). A few have come through. At one stage, Mr Alan Ferguson imported a number of special E31’s including Alpina’s, (not to mention CSI’s) but some have been shipped off shore now. I had a very rare 6 speed 840ci sport but always wanted a 850csi! The ultimate!

Im also curious, if the rego lapsed, why have the plates been handed in/removed? Theres no need to do that

They chase you for plates these days.  If the car is de-registered or re-registered they want the plates back.  If you don't hand them back in you get a $200 fine.

Hah, I think I mentioned to you on there before I had an 850CSi but would go manual 840i  msport given the choice again!

no question the v8 reportedly has the best balance and greater simplicity than the V12... but if you want it, you want it!

You know it’s funny. A good old friend of mine who told me me so much about BMW’s from the 70’s and 80’s told me repeatedly too that the 840’s equipped with the 6 speed manuals were so much rarer than 850csi’s ( in rhd). He was right. Only 54 with the M60 4.0, and 3 with the M62, 4.4.
Our NZ new 840 6 speeds’ were even appointed with the Euro CSI body kits ( including mirrors that the Us spec CSi’s never got). I have a good friend who has 2 NZ new examples-  lucky boy!
I miss my 8 - it was a stunning car and only had 53,000 k’s so drove like new.

840 + 6-speed is the bees knees! but the 850csi is the holy grail of the e31!!

I was told that there were six NZ new manual 840's (excl the converted one), one is de-reg and at least one is now in Oz. So having two of four remaining is pretty 'rare' in my book - if you find one, I would be keeping them, ah I mean it!! 😎

Interestingly, almost all of the 840 manual parts are still available to buy brand new for not crazy money. And although uncommon and not cheap, the V8 bellhousing 420G gearbox is still pretty attainable unlike the V12 bellhousing gearbox.

I may have priced up all the parts to convert an 840 earlier this year when I was considering the project. 4.6is swap + 6 speed 840 would be wicked.

A 4.6is would be amazing in that chassis with a manual, what a great idea!
