Jooles' E31 project log

Recommended Posts

I second Darren's "WIN" post, that kit on the blue E31 looks the money!

It's the CSi kit (or a rep of it), either way I think it's the best but have seen a few pics lately of other front lips that look the goods:

Yellow would be cool if it was something like Ferrari Fly Yellow, not a flat Dakar shade.

Was he drunk when he fitted that?

This from the man who made a splitter from a piece of ply?! (although yours was rather good).

Agreed. Dakar is a bit pastel for my taste. The one in the pic is not a standard BMW colour - much richer, deeper yellow. I think it suits the ridiculousness of the car.

Definitely will, Dave, but think it will be some way off. Likewise, if you decide to source some leather for yours let me know.

Am thinking of removing the skins and restitching with a contrast colour as a stopgap as the black leather in mine is in pretty good shape.

Caught up on some long promised home improvements and family time this weekend so the car lay idle. However, got a few bits and pieces due to arrive over the next couple of weeks. Once everything's here I'll be putting aside a weekend (and hopefully borrowing some garage space) to do the following:

  • Media blast and paint intake manifolds
  • Clean injectors and replace seals
  • Replace DME and EML coolant sensors
  • Replace DK motors (electronic throttle bodies) and re-sync banks
  • Replace all intake manifold gaskets

Hopefully this will sort the remaining niggles and the engine will look 100 times better when it's been cleaned up.

My Magnaflow boxes and new tips arrived. Got them fitted today at Pitstop, Grey Lynn. All up including fitting less than $750. Looks, sounds and feels better. Now need to fit the rear diffuser to tidy up the back. Sorry about the shite pics. Will take some proper pics soon and get a vid/audio recording as soon as I've got cylinders 2 and 3 sparking properly.

Will get a sound clip at the weekend... In the meantime, some porn:

Also picked up a couple of working ignition leads to fix the weak spark on cylinders 2 and 3. Quick rangi job with some cable ties rather than remove the entire harness just so I could drive it home... What a difference! Lightyears better performance, acceleration and fuel consumption. Throttle's still pretty jumpy but the recon'd DK motors should sort that out. Very happy.

Darren, any doubts I had about the M70 are gone. It's still not running perfectly but once I've finished the remedial and got some decent chips, I think it will be hard to justify an S62 conversion... The manual is still a must.

Really?

Interesting.

My old man had a 750i back in the day. I drove it several times. I agree it was a bit of a monster, wouldn't let up until over 225kph as I remember.

But I doubt it would stay with my M5.

Maybe I should take you for a quick run.

change that perspective.

If we had a long enough road I think the 850 would win... Eventually. But it's a lot slower low down, though still no slouch. What I really meant is that putting the s62 into such a heavy car probably won't make the night and day difference of the M5 v 850... And for the same money I could do a lot with the M70. Who knows though... The idea of an S62 8er is very tempting.

What sort of diff ratio is it running?. I remember my '92 750il pulled alot better with a 3.64(iirc) than my mates '89 750i with a 3.07 or something similar.

Currently running 3.15. Have seen a 3.64 LSD that is very tempting. Forums says 3.91 E34 M5 LSD is a common upgrade for the 4speed 850s.
