Actually... if Mrs W didn't think E38's were "ugly, old man cars", and they had 5 lap and diagonal belts, we'd have one instead of the E39... ... I was gunning for a very late 728i, that I could convert to manual - I reckon they'd move OK, and have a good amount of space in the back for the kids, and pretty cheap to run. Either that, or a 740i

^ Absolutely the wrong tool to use for a properly converted vehicle I am afraid. I would not use that to do the conversion - loads of people in the USA I've helped out when they did this and used the above tool and couldn't get it to work properly (had to leave SMG module plugged in ect - or it would not idle correct or lost power ect ect .. the list goes on) You do this with factory tools if you want a perfect conversion (i.e. the car thinks and believe it is a 6 speed manual from the factory). There are parts of the tune in the SMG equiped DME Software that is very different to the standard 6 speed manual (many don't realise this and do the simple change with tools like the above). Basically remove SMG option code with NCS Expert from the LCM and IKE .. recode the DME with a non SMG software version from the same hardware/firmware type (or update it if you like) - have the correct wiring so that things like clutch switch is recognised.

Is an E65 more to everyone's liking? I saw one of those for sale this morning... Scary stuff. A car which would have nudged $200k little more than 10 years ago, now selling for under $10k. There have always been bargains to be had on these upper echelon cars, but that still seems quite a staggering depreciation. Of course, it probably takes into account the repair bills when that huge list of options starts to go wrong!

Agreed - after a country drive, you've have to look in the grilles to see what got caught - pukekos, hawks, milking sheds etc. That grille is probably the size of a complete original 7 series.

I'll probably get shot down fo this, but them's the breaks... He got what could be an excellent deal when buying the E34. He's selling at a profit. It's what dealers do all the time. Seems expensive though, especially when I've been offered a good condition, WoF'd (but no rego) E38 740i for $1k...

I think the E38's big enough to pull off these 21 inch Alpina wheels with class so 20's will be more than fine and wont look gangsta.
