The only EV worth owning - E31 840ci ? http://www.evbmw.com/ He has been building this for 2+ years. It has Tesla components installed and looks very interesting. He has done some pretty cool conversions of 90's era BMW's. The E30 looks to be very tidy and well done!

Hey Guys, It's time to let my pride and joy go to another home. Me and the wife are cutting back on costs and are dropping down to one car, I now e-bike into work and this just sits in the garage and only gets used occasionally on the weekends. I've loved every minute of ownership, and I hope to find another home on here for it rather than have to put it up on Trademe. I have full service history for it in my ownership, prior to me there was one other NZ owner, and originally from Japan. Recently done the brakes/rotors (all around) 60,000km's left in them Near new front tyres Rear tyres have plenty of life left in them No modifications apart from blacking out the kindey grille, and white angel eyes Recently serviced 102,000km Always garaged and washed meticulously every fortnight! There are no issues that i know of with the car except that it could do with a transmission fluid change as it very occasionally hesitates in 6th gear at around 2k RPM. I had it checked at Auckland City BMW who had it on their computers, checked all the gear ratios, torque converter etc etc and said it was perfect, just needs a fluid change, this would be at a cost to the new owner of around $1000 Due to the above, i will let it go for $14000 If you would like to discuss further please get me on mobile (Zero 2 1 Two three Zero 3 0 7 7 ) Or, email me - adam @ mada . co . nz

Guy built a nice E30 Vert with Tesla and Volt gear. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCa5kGfLlOUNlxuVF2RRTDig Looks quite fun.

I like it. As much as i love petrol engines they are on the way out and will go EV for a daily as soon as its more viable. The E30 wouldn't be my first choice but you could do much worse and it still looks better most EV's ever will. I'm sure ill end of doing a conversion in the future on something in the 90's era, which would be provide a good balance.

That's the future right there. it looks like a very tidy and professional job. The key is to keep the standard engine mounts and not cut too many holes for cables and then the process is reversible and should not offend the purists too much. You're probably looking at about US$30k to do this properly, but Moore's Law will kick in at some stage so that eventually the cost curve will come down to a level where it'll be cheaper to convert to EV rather than do an engine rebuild. Admittedly you do lose all that soul-stirring sound, but our future selves can always be consoled when we realise how much money we are saving not having to maintain all those moving parts slapping ridiculously back and forth ?

Sad times when even RR have to succumb to a market full of people who hate driving that buy SUV's/Sports cross over vehicles.

I havent read the book but I can fit as much in my 1 compared to our old E91 325i wagon. The shape of the boot on the 1er, width and height means I can fit more and easier than the wagon. Only compromise is length but you can always leave it open and tie it down if required.

SMG / CSL parts bin are a plus for me. The red interior seems to be a common UK thing . It’s going to be more collectable than standard models. Biggest expense on these is worthy tyres in my experience.. People worry about bearings / smg pumps , subframes , vanos , biff bolts , cam bolts , steering hoses , coil packs , gear position servos , head gasket , alternator replacements etc. With mine it’s done 160,000 and I’ve driven 115,000 of them.over past 7 years. biggest expenses... $9k on rubber. Or $25k on gas. , $21k on parking , and $1200 per year in dealer serving and parts. I think some times we focus on the maintenance costs on e46 M3s where as the costs are elsewhere. $30k for the cs seems like good value for a car that is a joy to drive.

Final update for this thread, in case someone encounters the same issue as me and stumbles across this thread: This Saturday I went back to pick-a-part and grabbed the hydraulic tensioner I spotted the weekend before. Here's it off the old block. $11 And the old mechanical tensioner and pulley I pulled of my motor It seems the tensioning spring in the mechanical unit was worn and making an unpleasant sound. It was doing its just still, but admittedly did sound a lot like a failed pulley. Worth saying though, if you think you have failed pulleys and you still have the mechanical tensioner, you''re better off replace the whole thing with a hydraulic tensioner. Unrelated, I also picked up a oil level sensor from another wreck at pick-a-part for $29 as the one in my vehicle is faulty. Figured it was worth the try to see if it works by replacing my definitely broken one next service. I'll be sure to replace the o-ring though. Anyway, that about wraps things up. Thanks to those that offered insight and/or advice, helpful as always. Chuuurr!!

I'd say if that's a pulley then it's in very bad shape and I wouldn't drive the car until it was replaced least you lose a belt. Pulleys normally give a telltale high-pitched whine long before the bearings fail. Also a pulley noise will change with the revs, does that happen? You can test them yourself by slacking off the belt and spinning them with your fingers to listen for noise and feel smoothness. if you're going to do that you might as well loop the belt off the accessories also (keep a track of routing) and check the alternator, water pump and power steering pump by feel also. If it's not something belt related then I'm sorry but I can't offer any other suggestions.
